I boot-up in the morning, or even restart during the day, and get the avast6 “!” in the tray. If I bring up the UI, it shows Real-time shields not running. Normally, a manual [Fix It] click solves it, but if I just touch nothing, I can wait 3, 4 or 5 minutes. After that, the “!” goes away and the Definitions Updated green popup appears. Any idea why real-time shields won’t start until the database gets updated?
Hmmm… please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).
If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.
Are you referring to one of these? After I removed avast5 and did a clean install of avast6, there were 1 or 2 (I don’t remember) EMPTY “…\Alwil Software” directories, I assumed were missed by the uninstall, and I deleted them. Did I mess-up?
fidmas, your logs seems ok.
Beats me. Anyone know how long, after startup, avast6 tries to update the database?
If you have broadband an Internet connection could be available very soon after boot.
Very soon after a connection is established/available then avast will check for updates.
To delay the update of avast into a permanent internet connection (DSL), just change (or add) AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds value into the [InetWD] section of avast5.ini file.
You could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 180 (3 minutes). That should be enough.
Thanks. I do have a DSL connection that powers-up with the system. I was using that variable, set to 120, but took it out when I noticed the problem. Didn’t change anything. I can put it back set at 3 minutes.
I’m starting to wonder though. I just did a restart, only 2 hours after the last update, and the Real-Time Sleds stayed off for about 90 seconds. Then got better all by itself. Updating never came into play this time.
I gotta play more.
Just FYI: the problem seems to have magically gotten some better. Now, at times, Avast comes up with the red X for a little while. Then gets OK for 1 to 2 seconds. Then I get the “!” and Real-Time shields aren’t running for about 30 to 90 seconds. Then everything gets better. I guess I can live with that.
