After a repair installation of XP, I had to reinstall avast. avast says my system is unsecured. When i go to"real time shields", the page shows a large circle and not real time shields. I have used avast for many years and this is the first that real time shields is unavailable. Please help and thank you in advance.
Have you rebooted since this reinstall ?
If not do that first.
If that doesn’t resolve it - Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
You may need to reboot after the repair.
Thank you. I have carried out your suggestion, and all other solutions given on this forum but none work I have added a new topic. It seems that the fault is with avast, as when I go to “fixit” there is an error notice -Windows cannot find C:\program files\avast software\avast\VisthAux.exe. I have no other antivirus program on my computer. If this problem is not solved, and as I spend time on the internet, I will have to install a different antivirus program.
It’s now very late where David is.
Since the repair did not work you should perform a clean install.
-
Download avast installer from here → http://www.avast.com/en-us/download-software
free, pro, or internet security -
Download the uninstall utility from here → http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility

Using the control panel → add/remove programs (XP) or programs and features (Windows 7) → uninstall avast

Restart your computer
-
Run installer downloaded in step 1.
-
Reboot
I’m still here ;D you can try this first, may a little less hassle than a clean reinstall.
If you check is this file actually there C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\VisthAux.exe ?
If it isn’t present, this is a copy of mine from the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\ folder of avast free 7.0.1426 https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Public/avast/VisthAux.exe?w=c48e2891. But you would have to be using the free 7.0.1426 version.
You would have to disable the avastUI, Settings, TroubleShooting, self-defence module to be able to copy this file in the the avast folder.
