Really disappointed on avast

I have pro version of avast with new virus definitions (0643-3).
For two days Ive been getting warning of virus win32:horst-n and I’ve tried both removing file and quarantine file. Every time I reboot my computer I get the warning again. I made full system scan and it didn’t find anything, but after reboot… same warning again. Next thing was to do F-secure online scan and it found 6 files infected with Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Horst.kp and 1 file infected with Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Horst.kr And now the warnings are gone.

So when my license ends I will be buying some other program unless I get a really good explanation why Avast couldn’t get rid of those viruses or even see them. >:(

Where / how were you getting the warnings?
If you look around here you will see you have done what most advise in getting a second opinion.
no A/V is going to get everything and the fact you have paid for pro version gives the same detection rate as the free, I would be interested to know how broadly detected the trojan you speak of actually is.
This is a support forum and mostly the responses come from users like yourself. If youre just here to abuse someone or threaten to change products then I could care less.

Maybe my message was bit too aggressive, but I was just so angry. :-[

I know I basically pay for nothing. But because I’m using this computer for business purposes I just can’t use avast for free.

Messages were those pop-ups by avast real time scanning.
I think that those file avast spotted were made by the virus every time computer started. So avast didn’t see the real virus but just those files done by it.
About detection by other programs. Well at least f-secure found it. I checked that also Kaspersky, Sophos and clamav know the virus. I didnt find anything about it on Symantec site, so norton might not find it either.

And about support forums. Normally you’d expect to get answers both from authors and users in support forum. So if no one from avast reads this forum it should be called avast user forum, not support forum.

I would try to do a boot time scan. Sometimes if AVAST (or anyother antivirus program) finds an infected file but it is running, or in use it can not be removed. when you do a boot time scan your operating system has not loaded yet so the virus is not running and can safely be removed.

As far as my opinion for Avast goes I love it. It was recommended to me by a friend a couple years ago (who was recommended to him by a neighbor who works for the Canadian mounted police in cybercrime), at the time I had Norton installed. I removed it and installed Avast. TO my complete supprise,it found a whole bunch of infected files norton had not detected and it is much lighter on system resources too. I liked it so much I recommended it to my boss and deployed it in my company. We have had it for almost 2 years now and I have no complaints. I even deployed it in another company I worked for for a couple months.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

As Cloussau said the paid version of Avast WILL NOT give a better virus detection rate. The Pro and Free version use the same virus signatures. Also the viruses have diferent names withing diferent AV companies. So, if a virus is called A in a antivirus, it can have the name B in other AV company. And yes, you lose the money if you wanted better detection rate. The Pro version only add some features like a script blocker, advanced user interface and others.

The detection rate of Home and Pro versions are the same. The engines and the virus databases are the same.
Ok, there are some differences on ‘archive’ scanning, but not detection itself.

Which are the name and the path of the infected file?

Recurring infection is not a problem of the antivirus, but the way on how virus infects.
If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

  1. Disable System Restore on Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];310405
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot.
  4. Use a-squared, Free AVG Antispyware, SUPERantispyware or Spyware Terminator (trojan removers).
