Sorry… I’ve forgotten that…
There should be a warning.log at that folder.
Thanks
I found the Warning file and I am including some lines which have some errors repore]ted
I deleted many lines in the setup.log file but the size remained the same after I rebooted.
Should I try to rename it setup.log.old and see if the system rebuilds it or creates a new one?
Here are some of the lines of the warning file
attempting to update. Please check the logs.

It won’t harm… you will just lost that info and system will rebuilt it when you try to repair/update avast again.
OK thanks I will try it and let you know later as I have to leave
I’m back
I renamed setup.log.old and the system created a new one very small. However, Avast Log Viewer still does not open
Maybe there are some corrupt files like warning or others
I would say that it is likely to be something more serious than that, so if you have already tried a repair, then it is time to do a clean reinstall.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot, install the latest version, reboot.
Thanks
My Alwil folder has over 90mb. I have dial up and if I have to redownload all that again it will be impossible at this speed.
Can I preserve all Virus and VPS Updtates?
If no I rather loose this option until I get back home and connect DSL
If it is only the program and is smaller then let me know
The size of the avast folder bears no resemblance to the size of the download which is 20.7MB (which is a compressed installation file, so when unpacked, installed it will be much bigger).
There is no need to preserve anything, If you have DSL available, yes wait and download the latest version and the uninstall utility on DSL and transfer to the system requiring the reinstall.
I am still a little confused.
If I do not have to preserve anything, what happens to the DATA folder that has over 55mb and other folders?
If I download the unistall uitity, do I use it to unistall or do I use ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS first I read the information on the unistall utility page and it says that the utility can be used because ADD/REMOVE does not completely remove the program
After I do that would I have to re register? or can I preserve my registration?
Also what happens to the VPS file, is it included in the download?
Tech… DavidR went offline… can you answer these questions?
It will be recreated, there is nothing in the data folder that isn’t recreated albeit the logs, etc. will be much smaller as they won’t have much in them, but they/the information in them isn’t essential.
The downloaded installation file contains the VPS up to the time it was available for update. Any updates to the VPS would still be incremental and small. Trust me just reinstall.
You should use add remove programs, and reboot first, I’m taking the precaution of suggesting you also run the uninstall utility after the reboot (because everything wasn’t working as expected) to ensure everything is removed. So follow the steps as outlined in my previous post.
Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot, install the latest version, reboot.
Thanks
I downloaded the program. It was not 22 mb it was only 11.5 mb with name setupeng. If I place the
mouse on it is shows 4.8.1169
Is this the correct one?
Would I have to register again once installed?
The size is 11,266
It’s the latest stable (non-beta) version.
No, you can use the key you’ve received before by email.
I’m working with the file size given by avast.com of 20.7MB (not 22MB), so I don’t know where you downloaded your copy from ?
I can’t see how it is so much smaller unless the download didn’t complete or is corrupt.
See image 1 from the avast download page.
See image 2 from my firefox download process reporting the size of file to be downloaded, basically confirming the avast.com size.
See image 3 from download.com (Cnet), which also confirms the firefox download.
You don’t have to re-register just enter the same key you were sent before.
I already unistalled the program and also used the unistall utility. I downloaded a file using the link you provided on page 2 of this forum and used a green link that says download from download.com
I am now redownloading it using the first link " English’ that appears below the greem link.
It is going to take over 3 hrs so I am exitinhg the forum and will let you know of the results tommorrow
Thanks
As you can see I too used the download.com link in the image to show the correct file size, it is much better to get it from avast.com (image 1 above, scrolling past the Cnet Green link) as I’m sure the avast servers aren’t under as much load as download.com. This may be why the download terminated early at 11.266MB.
My downloads usually take 3.5-4 minutes per MB on mu dial-up connection so it would take about 74-84 minutes even at 5min per MB it would take 105 minutes. Good luck.
Thank you very much DavidR and Tech
I was able to download it from the first link " English" the one DavidR showed and it is now working OK. Its size was a little over 21MB
Now I can see the log viewer. It is empty of course,
These forums are a great asset for the program
Thanks again and take care

You’re welcome, glad I could help.
Stick around and browse the forums, especially the sticky topics at the top of each of the forums, not to mention the avast help file. They provide a wealth of information to help you get the best from avast.
Man…this is frustrating. Last night I left it running and this morning it does not show again
I do not know if it is a memory problem because as I was rebooting the PC it appeared momentarily and then closed
Maybe it is a conflict with any of these programs
Spybot S&D
Spystopper
Windows Defender
Pls advise
Spybot S&D and Windows Defender won’t be in conflict.
I don’t know about Spystopper, although I guess it does not conflict.
If you start the ashLogV.exe, won’t it load now?
