Realplayer now classified as badware!

Because of the hidden adware installs, realplayer has been classified as being badware.
Use one of the many free alternatives, like real alternative from here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/real_alternative.cfm
Read about realplayer classified as badware here:

Some classified it as adware just some 5 years ago, a good alternative is to use storm codecs, the nice thing of this software that it has MediaPlayer Classic included. Keep the crap from your machines and shun software that comes adware bundled?

I use Real Alternative and Quick Time Alternative, hehehe.

I use jetAudio it takes care of all of them.

Everything I like to watch online (PBS, C-Span, the occasional You Tube or DailyMotion clip) uses Flash or Windows Media Player. I pulled RealPlayer as to me it was pretty much useless and I didn’t need it.

I held onto Real for a while (have long since dumped it, of course) only because for some reason Media Player started for having problems with midi files while they still played fine in Real. These days I use WinAmp for virtually all media.

I never bothered with the Real alternative, since I haven’t run into Real-specific formats in ages. My son thinks, and it’s a reasonable guess, that those are rapidly becoming obsolete as Real scares more and more people away.

I binned real player when the only way to disable it from starting was to rename the realsched file. I like to be in charge of what starts on my system

Me too, one of the best all-in-one multimedia programs I ever had.

Will any of these alternatives play rtsp and mms? I listen to live streaming media eveyday. Here is one of the live streaming media links I listen to everyday: mms://206.192.61.163/sonlife

If anyone cares to try my link to let me know if it will work in their choices of alternative players, please let me know if it works in which player. Thank you.

Even though your choice may not be my favorite, jetAudio handles your link without a flaw.

Thank you, Bob.

Any time…

Bob,
I can’t get it to play in JetAudio, followed your directions.

I’m good with Windows Media Player and don’t need Real player at all. Already used it but you’v got to decide wether to keep Microsoft’s bundled software or else. Thanks for letting me know anyway, Polonus!

I followed the same directions and it’s working here:

I have got no problem with RA becoming obsolete, i always check updates. I know if RP have got an update, the same day i have the new version of RA. Uninstall old version and install new.
I use K-Lite Codec pack with QTA, RA and MPC, and i never had problems.
For audio files i prefer AIMP2

I’m using 7.0.5 Basic, are you using Basic or Plus? Does it matter if you have WMP 10 or 11? I have 10.

I have WMA checked in JetAudio file type association. Still won’t play SonLife Radio.

I have no trouble playing it in RealPlayer.

Never really had a need for realplayer. I use VLC and Mplayer on both PC and Mac and there is not much they cant play.

I downloaded Windows Media Player 11, now mms://206.192.61.163/sonlife works in JetAudio.

Evidently JetAudio works like RealPlayer in that it doesn’t really play mms:// links, it’s like a front end for WMP. JetAudio probably plays other things directly.

Yeah, I gave Realplayer the boot about 5 years ago.
