For about two days now I have been removing the unnecessary desktop shortcut since it’s pinned to the taskbar, but it just keeps coming back. Rebooting the system and the thing still wants to keep appearing. I am using the latest version as you can see in the attached screenshot. How do I make this shortcut stop appearing on my desktop all by itself?

No, never thought to do that. So far the shortcut has not returned since yesterday. Should it randomly pop back up I will try that and see what happens. Will come back here and let you know. Thanks for the advice!

Desktop shortcut still reappearing on my desktop. I truly think every time it updates definitions this thing reappears. Wasn’t there about an hour ago after deleting it again yesterday, but today at 9:59AM definitions updated and the shortcut is back!
Strange, try a clean reinstall.
- Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
- Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
- Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
- Reboot.
Followed above instructions so now it’s just a waiting game to see if this pesky shortcut reappears. Will let you know in about 24 hours.
Sorry for not getting back to this topic before now. Reinstalling did the trick!! Thank you so much for the help.
I’m about to try a clean installation for the intermittent behaviour shield problem (sometimes failing at startup).
So don’t uninstall Avast through Add / Remove Programs even if you are able to?
