RECAPTCHAs Back Again?

I logged in today (as per usual) and noticed the login screen had been changed - OK, no problem there.

I was then greeted with a RECAPTCHA to solve. Has there been a policy change on this forum?

A helpful addition to try and curb those pesty spammers

I haven’t experienced it, but then again it is rare that I log out.

I actually had to do a system restart, whilst testing something else (avast Backup and Restore settings, that some have reported failing when trying to restore).

When I started Firefox and my open Tabs, I had to Login to the forum and I didn’t get a Recaptcha.

Are you using some sort of VPN it may think is suspect ?

@CraigB
I know the reasoning, but I have been a forum member since 2005! I’m well past my first 3 posts…

@DavidR
No VPN, no proxy, no hardware or software changes that should make any difference.

(And of course I had to solve another one to post this reply >:( )

Very strange, I can’t see anything related to your forum use that might/could trigger this. In your info to the left of your post has that said ‘Poster’ for a while, seems strange for that post count ?

Do you actually log out when you leave the forum or clear cookies, etc. ?

All I can suggest at present is do another quick reply, which will probably result in your third (and hopefully last) recaptcha interrogation.

Hi Alan, did you try the “Keep me signed in” option…!?

Dave
Dunno how long it has said ‘Poster’ - I don’t really take any notice.

I do (and always have) cleared cookies.

Hi Asyn.

Yup. Tried the “Keep me signed in” option.

I have just completed my ninth login - all with RECAPTCHAs :frowning:

I’ve had enough now. Shame after 15 years >:(

I understand your anger, but I couldn’t reproduce it here. :-\

I don’t use the Keep me signed in option either and this isn’t an issue for me. If I restarted the browser and I have my tabs restored, I sign in if required (using my Firefox saved logons) and login. No Recaptcha.

I did experience this when I logged on once at an another site and that was only the Yes I’m a human check box. So I just wonder if something is considered suspect with your connection (which was why I mentioned the VPN question).

What is really strange is why this also goes beyond the forum anti-spam measure of the first 3 posts and the fact that your forum stats recognises your post count and aren’t in the newbie category. I can only think that this is something above and beyond the usual forum anti-spam measure. What that might be is beyond me.

I’ve had the recaptcha appear twice so far, once yesterday and once today.

I only had to click on a few photos (traffic lights) which couldn’t be much simpler.

Hi guys, meanwhile I tested it to the limit…

With and without:

  • Cookies deletion
  • “Keep me signed in” option
  • VPN connection

…but still can’t reproduce it here.

So, no idea why some get it and others don’t. ???

Well aren’t you the lucky one!

On all 12 occasions I’ve logged in I have had to solve a minimum of 7 torture sessions “puzzles”.

EDIT: Thanks for your efforts, Asyn. For the moment I’ve worked around it by whitelisting all Avast cookies.

That’s strange also as I have made no provisions to ‘whitelist’ avast cookies in Firefox. I have uMatrix and uBlock Origin, Disconnect and Privacy Badger add-ons with no issue.

I also used to have Cookie Monster, but that isn’t compatible with the latest versions of Firefox. I did use CookieMaster as a replacement for Cookie Monster, but that proved to be more trouble than it was worth, so it sits disabled.

OK I have been checking again after I did a system restart.

When I opened up my fixed tab for the forums I got the logon screen as I expected, at the bottom of that screen is the small Recaptcha icon.

However I didn’t require any further interrogation I was able to click the Continue button as my firefox password manager had filled the fields. So it isn’t the forum anti-spam measures that hitting you but the integration of the Google Recaptcha and the forum logon URL, I think. Why is the $64,000 dollar question.

Try to change your IP address if possible (ex. restart your router or ISP terminal), might work…

I can join the club now, got my first ReCaptcha today. ;D Still no idea what triggers it. ???

Welcome, new member Asyn  We’ll soon have enough members to start our own forum ;D

No response from Avast team, I suppose?

Was wondering what was going on as I have seen this on occasion over the last couple of weeks.
I’m in.

I haven’t have it happen to me so can’t offer any suggestions.
