Receiving repeated "Threat has been detected" from same websites - SOLVED!

Hello All, I have recently begun to receive repeated threats from Avast Free from the same eight websites. Namely, theparenttrace.net, goupcomp.us, setgroupsuper.info, filesearch4u.com, fileking.co.il, cacheder.net, groupcomp.us, and apps-infor.info. I have uninstalled any unknown app files on the computer, done an Avast! scan of the computer, downloaded and run a second opinion virus detector, but have had no luck in stopping the alerts. Needless to say, I do not voluntarily go to these sites.
If anyone has any ideas about what might be happening, I’d appreciate a heads up.

Thanks,

Unless you really like to receive a lot of spam mails, it is not a good idea to post your email on a public webboard.

Here are the requested files.

Could you let me know how the computer is after this

CAUTION : This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/FRSTfix.JPG

Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

THEN

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

[*]Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
[*]Click on Scan.
[*]After the scan is complete click on “Clean”
[*]Confirm each time with Ok.

[*]Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Requested files are attached.

Did not find AdwCleaner[S1].txt so I sent what was in adwcleaner folder.

How is the computer behaving now ?

I do not appear to be receiving the subject “Threat has been detected” any longer. Thanks a million. Great site and expert help! A win-win situation.

I think I spoke too soon! My computer is not behaving as it did before the process of eliminating these messages. Specifically, several shortcuts I have on my desktop take about a minute to come up after I DC them. The computer seems to boot faster than before but these issues still trouble me. Sometimes, when I hover the mouse pointer over an icon on the quick launch bar, it does not show an arrow. Sometimes it shows a vertical double headed arrow and sometimes it shows the busy hourglass. After several minutes, usually, it appears to ‘catch up’ and then the icons are available to click on.

Sounds like a memory problem

Download and run Mike Lin’s start up control panel from here https://web.archive.org/web/20131106030702/http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Initially disable all bar Avast and reboot
Does this cure the problem ?

I attempted to run the panel from your link but it appears that the file was damaged during the download (I got the torn sheet indication). I downloaded the zip file and extracted the program for the control panel. The program has several options. You did not give any instructions as to what to run from the program. Also, I don’t understand the “disable all bar Avast” instruction.

An item that might give you a clue as to what might be happening is that the application that is not acting just right is a shortcut on my desktop to Windows Explorer. I have changed the properties on the shortcut to run explorer.scf with the command line 'explorer.scf /e /c:'. This executes Windows Explorer but starts you out in the root directory of the C: drive. As far as I can tell, this is the only shortcut that exhibits this slowness in starting up. If I create a shortcut and leave the target as explorer.exe it starts up right away as the other shortcut used to do.

Create or modify your existing shorcut to read:

%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,/root,

That should now function properly

I will make a few screen shots of control panel and then post them
