I installed Avast Home Edition in my Windows XP machine back near the end of November. Everything seemed to run fine until just a few days ago, when I started getting messages on system boot that my antiviral might be out of date. When I checked yesterday I found that the virus definition file was several days old so I updated it manually, and upon closer inspection today I noticed that the “i” ball was missing from the system tray and the “a” ball was no longer rotating. I have done the definition file update manually for the last couple of days, and the Avast web site seems to think that I have the latest version of Avast Home 4.8, but I can’t help the feeling that something is broken, even if Avast doesn’t seem to find anything. Please Verify?

Ensure your system date is correct (double click on the clock) check the day monte and year and adjust as required. the VPS being a few days out of date shouldn’t trigger that (greater than 7 days yes).

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Did you merge the two avast icons into one, that is an option ?

The ‘a’ icon should rotate when scanning unless you have disabled the animation in the Program Settings, Appearance section. Is there a Red circle with a bar over the ‘a’ icon ?

Did you have another antivirus before avast in this computer?
Which is your firewall?
