So far been using “Free Download Manager”

What should be the safest one to you?

well, if use firefox downthemall(dta) addon is okay. if you want a different application do the downloading job, you can try orbitdownloader available at http://www.filehippo.com/download_orbit_downloader/

while installing it may install a toolbar… make sure u dont install it if you dont want it.

If you are on a High Speed Internet connection why use a download manager?

A download manager is good if you have dial-up as the connections are slow and frequently disconnect.

I haven’t used dial-up since 2000 when my ISP provider offered real inexpensive DSL connections.

I also use FDM. You can scan downloads when complete with avast. It is also the fastest torrent downloader I have used.

FDM is my main DM, but I also use Orbit with Grab++ for the few sites that FDM can’t properly download from.

In addition to what Sammo says about auto-scanning the downloads, a DM allows you to download music and video that a browser cannot.

Keep historical (useful sometimes), organize downloads, control the number of segments of very big downloads (break restrictions). Save downloads to specific folders, resume downloads (if necessary), torrent download, auto-scan.
