hello all,

first time I’ve had a problem with avast ???

trying to set it up for a friend

generic hp box with XP Home / 1.5 gigs ram / lots of room on drive

downloaded avast today / free for home version

installs fine, then I get the red ball on the avast icon

right click and choose Start, nothing happens

when I go to Services Avast is there but not started? / when I click and choose start I get this message

" Error: 1053 Service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashon"

Then I can’t stat avast / sure hope someone can help

Have you tried repairing your installation of avast? Go to the control panel, click add/remove programs, find avast on the list of programs, click on it, and then click where it says change/remove. A small window should have opened, so now scroll down until it says “repair” and then click next. But in order for this to work, you must be connected to the internet.

ya, I tried repair, and remove / reinstall several times , no luck

this machine had norton on it before, it was removed, but could there be an issue with something left behind?

I would uninstall avast first, run the tool, and reinstall the latest vrsion of avast.

Maybe. Pls try official Norton uninstall tool.

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
