Red ball on Avast symbol

My Windows Security Alert said my virus software was not up to date and the avast symbol has a red ball on it. I clicked on the avast symbol with the red ball and followed all the instructions, turning off, and then, when that didn’t work, going to “change/remove”. But, at the crucial moment. hoping to see the “repair” message – nothing happened. As I click on “change/remove” it just flashes and doesn’t take me anywhere. What can I do now?

What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
Is the computer time and date correct?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Had in the past?
