Red box error

Hi, this is my first post. I was here eariler and read a post about the same trouble I am having. Sorry but I can’t find it again. Whenever I turn on my computer a red box in the lower right hand corner pops up with the error message: “An error has occured while trying to update. click here for more information.” I click on the red box and this box pops up: "Total time 1:47 Vps- already up to date (current version 00778-3) server: download 47 avast com (70.87.83.106) download files: 3(0.031cB) download time: 4s

This has never done this before. It just started a few days ago. I have been using avast! for about a year now. In January. I have Windows XP sp2 Internet Explorer. Avast! home edition.

I have check the time as “oldman” told in the other post. Can you tell me what I should do to get this to stop? One other question. It states that it does not work with Outlook Express only Microsoft Express and Microsoft Exchange. What’s the difference?

Thanks for your help.

To delay the update of avast into a permanent internet connection (DSL) you can change the value AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds into avast4.ini file. More details here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647

Alan’s experience: This is especially true during Windows update week. Windows automatic updates seem to hog resources even to just determine that updates do exist but you are just not allowed to download them yet (to prevent overload of Microsoft’s servers). So this is happening at every startup during the Windows update period until you have been permitted to download the updates. Although I do not have “smoking gun” logs to prove it (a bit hard to get on an overloaded system at startup) I am reasonably certain that the Windows automatic update process, at this time, can prevent the avast automatic VPS update from getting timely access to it servers and causing avast to report an automatic update error - especially on older, less powerful systems. This past week was Windows update week, some folks this week waited 4 or 5 days before being permitted to download the Windows updates through the automatic update process.

avast Internet Mail provider works with Outlook Express.
avast Outlook plugin works with Outlook/Exchange.

I started getting this red box error about a month ago on two of my office pc’s. When you check the settings it appears the updates are current. I am not a technie, I have a paid subscription and I need help figuring this error message out. Do I have protection or do I not? If I do, why does the error message continue to pop up at random times. This is very frustrating. I’ve been very pleased with Avast and have recommended to many business peers, now I’m wondering if it is what I thought it was. I need to know before my subscription comes up for renewal. >:(

Does your red box notification contain the same information as the original poster ?

Your protection is fine, you are experiencing a problem updating the VPS (virus signatures), however, as you say the updates are current, the latest VPS version is 000781-2, is that what you have (right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select about avast!) ?

You say this pops up at random, but is it also happening regularly after boot ?

You also say this happened about a month ago, which would coincide with the last program update, so your firewall could be blocking the avast update.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Updates are not related to protection themselves. The residents protect the computer. Of course, you need to be updated.

Can you manually update?
Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
