Avast was installed and the registration key was applied. It ran fine for several days; however, I just noticed that the blue a icon in the system tray has a red circle with a line through it. It indicates that 6 providers total, but that 0 are running. Right clicking, Start on-resident is available, but once I click on it…nothing happens.
I then tried clicking On-Access Protection Control - all of the residents are greyed out. When I click on Start, an information box named Persist the Changes ? pops up asking if I want to start/stop a resident provider. Do you want to save your changes to the resident task so that they are persisted even if the taks is restarted (reboot)? Press Yes to persit. When I click on yes, I receive:
The requested resident task was not found.
The operation could not be completed
We’ve had several bad storms with high winds here recently with the power going off and coming back on. It was out for several hours prior to me noticing the red circle.
The computer did not have any other antivirus programs on it prior to installing avast and is not running any others currently.
Any ideas why it would be running fine and now it’s not?
Yes, I uninstalled avast, used the avast program cleaner, and just recently reinstalled the program. It worked fine for about a week and is now not working.
Reading through some other suggestions on the forum, I tried to repair avast through the Add/Remove Program. It indicated that it was repaired, but the red circle is still there. I then updated to the most recent version of avast and rebooted - still there.
As I mentioned, there are no other virus programs running, none were previously installed, so I
m still at a loss why it’s not working.
The repair has effectively completed an integrity check, if it finds all OK it will report success.
Something else for you to try and that is to delay the loading of avast services, sometimes there could be a conflict or issue with the windows boot loading order where a service avast requires isn’t running.
Program Settings, Troubleshooting, ‘Delay loading of avast! services after other system services.’
I would say they are unavailable as the installation isn’t good (repair option seems bad also) so a clean reinstall is your best option.
Something I don’t know, what OS are you using ?
Are you running on an account with administrative privileges or a limited user account ?
This is often as a result of a previous AV. I know you said there wasn’t one on this system, but some systems come with a trial version of an AV installed.
I went ahead and uninstalled using the avast utility. I rebooted into safe mode and ran the utility - then installed avast. As I type this, avast is running and has been since last night. One question, can I still use the registration key that was submitted to me last November or should I request a new one?
This is our “old” computer or secondary one, it is running Windows 98 SE. We had a crash and I had to format and reinstall the OS; therefore, I know that it did not have any other AV program running. I’ve used avast for several years on this computer and would like to continue.
Also, I just checked the options under Troubleshooting and all of the options are unavailable, except the first one. Not sure if this is because of Windows 98 SE.
Yes you can use your original key, it still has a long time before you need to renew it.
It is most certainly because it is win98 as that was my light bulb moment (why I edited the post) when I associated greyed out with not available in older OSes, e.g. they don’t support the function. So only those functions available in win9x, winME, etc. will be active.
A format would have wiped any old AV installations you had so no worries in that regard.
Thank you so much for posting this as it has finally helped me! I have always had the red circle problem on Win 98 so could never use avast… had the grayed out parts etc, so was very frustrating…
so this time started in safe mode, installed it there and Presto !! it finally worked… thanks again (glad to have these forums)
