bt whots the main cause of exe getting corrupt ??? just curious …
Red circle common cause: presence of another antivirus (or remains of not well removed ones).
Exe files getting corrupt: file infectors… really dangerous. Get clean.
avast exe files getting corrupt: some extremely dangerous infections (some variants of Bagle/Beagle).
how do i clean this Bagle/Beagle infection ???
i do have latest virus updates of avast …
F-Bagle
The F-Bagle utility disinfects computers infected with the certain Bagle worm variants. Please see the readme.txt file for more information.

First we don’t know if you have a beagle infection, that is currently speculation. avast has a self-defence module that resists malware killing it (note I said resists not completely stops), some variant of beagle have been able to disable avast and most other AVs and in cases firewalls. Buy as has been said the most common reason is an other AV or remnants.
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
no dont have any other av … after clean installlation of xp … it was just avast 4.8 …
2day i have again a red cross on avast in system tray …
pogo1945 ,
I have not seen anything here that tells us of the version of avast you have installed and the operating system and its version you are working with. Can you please advise the information on both … it is easy for us to guess but your information is more useful.
win xp sp2 … avast version 4.8 home edition … build: jul2008 [4.8.1229] … xtreme toolkit version 1.9.4.0 … active skin version 4.2.7.3 … with updated virus def …
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
@Tech … thanx …
followed all ur steps bt no virus found …
bt system seems 2 b 2 heavy even its idle …
ashwebsv.exe = 39,245 kb
ashserv.exe = 15,358 kb
is this normal ??
Those figures are likely to be constantly changing as a) the ashServ.exe is the main scanning engine of avast, b) the web shield as you brows web pages that to will change, but they don’t seem excessive.
The other point of consideration is where you are getting the size values from as the Task Manager isn’t too accurate and within that there are several different size calculations, the VM Size has in the past been said to give a more relevant indication. See image of my figures as I’m posting this.
However, there are times when that is higher, but you can get an idea that there are great variations in how memory use is reported. In the greater scheme of things memory is there to be used or you would have a slower scan and more swapping out to the hdd both of which slow your system.
avast is by comparison to many other AVs relatively light on resources.
its happenning AGAIN … red cross over avast … guess, my pc HATES avast …
i dont wanna install “norton”, “kaspersky” et all … i have full faith in avast … bt right now am surfing net WITHOUT avast protection …
oops, hope nothing enters my pc …
Pogo, did you follow the steps on reply 8th?
yes @tech … followed all ur steps … & tried copying updation of virus def with this >>> http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12640.msg334430#msg334430
cannot copy both files >>> error access denied >> had disable “self defense module” before that …
so again did same steps again from ur 8th reply … & this time did online update my virus def … phew, wasted my presious MB`s … & inreturn avast owners get paid bt still problem is same …
Clean installation of XP? How? From a restore/recovery disk/partition? From a original XP cd/dvd?
Did you setup a firewall and av BEFORE connecting to the net?
Did you install ALL drivers for ALL your devices?
BTW, XP is up to SP3 for a while already.
Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
installation of fresh xp from ORIGINAL cd …
yes
yes
sp3 is not stable & my pc is quite old 2 [p4] …
now, many of my folders have grey check on “read only” option … is it normal ? or my pc is infected with some kinda worm ?
SP3 worked well in my old computers (5 years).
Can you post the name of these folders (full path of them)?
almost all folders have grey check marks …
@tech … if i format my pc & install avast again, cant i just copy those previously downloaded virus def`s instead of wasting my presious mb again ???
as am on LIMITED net usage … plz can v do that … tried ur old method [copy 400.vps & clnr0.dll] bt didnt work … any other ?
I really suggest that, at first time, you update the full virus database.
400.vps is enough. You need to disable avast and disable the self protection module (Troubleshooting tab of avast settings) to do that. Then copy the files, then enable both avast and the self protection module again.
No, there isn’t another method (better than the direct update).
