There’s a red circle on Avast! a ball icon in system tray and when I click on it, the error message appears saying ‘the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error’. How to I fix this. I have tried what Avast said to do, but it will not work. I use Firefox for my browser and now I can’t even get into Internet Explorer. Could someone direct as to what I should do. Maybe I should just uninstall and then reinstall and see if that works? I use Win XP 2002
Does this help?
Win XP 2002 … but do you also have SP1, SP2, and SP3 ?
To check which version of XP you are using, please follow this instruction.
Window XP, Professional, 2002, Service Pak 3. Yes, I did try using the other method to fix it and it did not work. In fact this morning when I tried turning on my computer, it took 3 tries to get the desktop to come up, so I do believe that now something is corrupted as it even took me forever to get here. I do not know a lot about computers, and it looks like whatever happened also messed up the memory too, so do believe I will just take it to the computer doctor. Thank you and I do appreciate the help though.
I thought I had read something like this quite some time ago. I think Tech or/DavidR knows how to deal with this issue. If I remember correctly, the major reason for this was conflict with other resident anti-virus. Did you have any other antivirus on the computer in question?
[Edit]Yes, this thread. If it is not a conflict issue, you may need to uninstall/clean install Avast! as DavidR suggests at the end of the thread.
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?
Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).
Of course, “repair,” first. I’ll leave you to surer hand, orangegloves.
