red circle (Win98)

Hi everyone, I just joined the forum for some tech help for exactly the same reason. My Avast Tray icon now has the red circle as well, displayed over the bottom left corner.
I now find that my ‘resident protection’ is disabled, and no matter what i try and do, i can’t restart it. If i run my pointer over the icon it says;
“avast! On-Access Scanner: 6 provider(s) total, 0 running”

I’ve done nothing different, and had no viruses, the only thing i did find was that after i manually updated the virus definitions etc, and downloaded them, i got a WinPatrol message saying that one of the dll files had changed, and did i wish to accept the changes, which i did.
And now, resident shield cannot be activated.
If i try to start it i get a grey pop-up box, with a red notification saying;
“The requested resident task was not found”
And then written below this is;
“The operation could not be completed”

I’m using Windows 98SE OS, don’t know if this is contributary?
Anyone have any help at all?
I’m thinking this is something to do with the last download rather than a machine/OS problem

Welcome to the forum.

It could very well be. 98 does seem to have a wee problem with program updates, Not vps updates though.

There are others also. An uninstall/reinstall usually gets you up and going again. There are instuctions in the above link.

Also you may want to help per VLK’s request near the end of that thread. It may help resolve this problem.
