I had to get some computer work done, took in to the shop and the %$#^ :-X turned off my avast icons in my task bar. Got them turned back on and now I’m getting this red error message when it tries to update.

You say your firewall is set-up correctly, but don’t say how it is setup, it may still possibly be firewall blocking.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.
When do these issues occur, directly or shortly after boot ?
Edit: Having read in more detail (read opened my eyes), you have at least got through to the update server as it is able to determine what version you had and what it should update to.
The log/s that it is referring to is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\setup.log. If you can post the last 100 lines after an update failure (try a manual update to trigger it if it doesn’t happen).
Nothing happens when I try to manually update… not even sure if I’m doing that correctly or not. Still getting an error message. What log am I supposed be giving you?
Oh sorry bout that, I am using the windows firewall only. And I’m not sure how to answer how it’s “set up”. I have added avast to the list of “exceptions” so it wont be blocked from any incoming network connections.
Well the windows XP firewall shouldn’t conflict with anything as it provides zero outbound checking. Effectively there is nothing to set-up in it.
Whilst the windows XP firewall is usually good at keeping your ports stealthed (hidden) it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall.
I have had a quick look at the log, but the end result looks like you have (or had) the latest VPS version. There was something in the earlier attempt and I believe it eventually completed successfully so I’m not sure if this part related to the failed attempt earlier.

I believe the 0x00000000 return code means it completed OK
