hey i had avast before and i wanted to try avg bt didnt like avg so i started using avast again bt now the new avast doesnt work my resident protection wont start and it says ‘the requested resident task was not found-the operation couldnt be completed’

Its a good decision to come back to avast! 
Did/Do you use any other security software? (Antivirus, Antispyware, Firewall,…)
Please download and run the AVG Remover. (that is the 32bit version… 64bit version can be found here)
After that uninstall avast!.
Run the avast! uninstall utility and reinstall avast!.
After a restart everything should work fine.

Most commonly associated with still having another VA installed or remnants left, so follow onlysomeone’s suggestions to fully remove AVG.
“The requested resident task was not found”
Put this phrase in the search bar will return a result of 35 instances of this problem.
This is not a problem with another VA nor remnants of a such previous installs.
In fact, this bug only appears on Win98 systems.
Workaround for this issue has been suggested and solved in other related threads on this board.
One caution though, remove initial install through a safe-mode reboot but reinstall with a normal boot.
Since Avast is the only top-tier VA that still works with the old Win98, it should act quickly to fix this bugs for Win98 users. There is an appreciable number of systems (possibly in the millions) still running this unsupported OS. Avast will win many more converts if they do.
