Redirect Problem - Zentom System Guard

So basically I had a malware known as Zentom System Guard install itself onto my PC. I quickly fixed and removed it with Malwarebytes Anti Malware and Spybot. I ran them many times. The main symptoms appear to be gone (popups, fake alerts). But it seems I was left with some sort of redirect problem. Everytime I google something and i click on the link on the results it takes me to a random adverstising site or yellow pages. I scanned with Kaspersky TDSS killer and it can’t find anything. Ive tried it multiple times. Also I can’t system restore for some reason. It doesn’t give me any dates to rollback too, which it should because i made many restore points in the last 3 months.

I might not reply as its a holiday long weekend here so I will be gone for a day or two. Bare with me please as my response might be slow but I really want to fix this annoying issue. much appreciated!

PS. I run on windows xp home. OTS is attached

Here you go. Might I say I was in a rush with this and did not completely scan it as it seems asbrw froze while scanning “minecraft” and I’m in a rush to leave for the cottage. I’m sorry if its incomplete and its the best I can do for now. If you need more to analyze then I’ll be glak to rescan when I’m back on Monday. Sorry again and please wait for me

Check this link. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=82239.msg671759#msg671759. It’ll give you the answer. I was infected with a redirect virus too. I found the solution myself.

aswMBR log looks clean to me…

Essexboy is notified and will check the log when he arrive

Hi - as is now becoming the norm I will be zipping the bad boys for Avast. Once this run is complete could you locate the zip folder in C:_OTS\moved files and upload to Mediafire and post the sharing link. Once I have snaffled it you can then delete the file

Start OTS. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the panel where it says “Paste fix here” and then click the Run Fix button.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Depending on what the fix contains, this process may take some time and your desktop icons might disappear or other uncommon behavior may occur.

This is no sign of malfunction, do not panic!

I would recomend the the OP to stick with essexboy’s instructions as he is our malware specialist here and the OP will recieve better help and step by step instructions so as not to get confused with the whole process.

Here you go. Sorry for the late reply. I came back from a roadtrip and was dead tired. I apprecioate all the responses so far. Thanks!

OTS fix log as you requested EssexBoy

Looks like it has been working through essexboy’s Fix OK. Are you still getting the redirect problems or experiencing any other symptoms ?

Can you also do the other task essexboy asked:

I will capture it for essexboy and let him know.

Err one problem. There is no zip folder in C:/__OTS/Moved Files. I only have a regular folder with random numbers and and a txt document. Should a Zip be there?
EDIT: This is what moved folder look like

http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/9219/zipgg.jpg

Also, after running EssexBoys fix, it redirects me about 3/10 times now, as opposed to the 8/10 times before the fix. Whatever this malware is, its still somewhere on my computer D:

Should I try running the fix again or would there be no point to that?

Well I don’t know if the folder would already be zipped (as that would require some form od zip program in combofix), just that the moved files folder contents should be zipped and uploaded to mediafire, etc.

So from your image there is a C:/_OTS/MovedFiles, so try zipping that folder.

I don’t know if the number of times it redirects is pre-determined, before the fix the scan is looking in many other areas, whilst the fix is only going to specific areas to execute the fix parameters.

If the symptoms are still present, I would suggest running another OTS scan and attaching the log, hopefully it should be smaller than 200KB so it can attached to your reply. This way essexboy will have something to analyse when he gets on-line.

Alright will do. Could someone tell me how I zip a folder ??? I’ve never done that in my life. And Google’s not gonna help this time :frowning: I’m getting more redirects then yesterday right now.

Also something strange happened this morning. As soon as I turned on the computer it was one hell of a lag fest. And then when i finally signed onto my web messenger I suddenly got two identical emails sent to me from BMO.Inform.Canada@bmo.65.18.214.61.ca telling me that someone was trying to hack my bank account blah blah. That is false cause I don’t have a bank account with BMO. So I didnt click any of the links and just junked them. Is it possible that some type of malware did this? I mean the email was sent the moment I logged onto MSN, which is weird since it was sent twice a minute apart.

You need to have install a zip program try this one http://www.7-zip.org/, once installed right clicking on the MovedFiles folder and selecting 7-Zip and add to archive.

If you right click the numbered folder and select send to … Compressed file, that will zip it for you… Meanwhile any further redirects ?

I’ll zip it tommorow morning, came home late from work and I’m too tired to turn on the PC.

And judging by the early googling i did this, it seems to be fine. All of my searches led to no directs, but I have noticed my browser is a little laggy. And scripts failed once while on youtube. I’ll do some more browsing tmrw and report back. I’m hoping for the best. Thanks for the help so far Essexboy and the rest!

The reason essexboy wants the zipped movedfiles folder is so that they can be passed to avast for analysis and inclusion in the virus database.

OK, I have PM’d the mediafire link to essexboy (and got a copy of the zip just in case).

Edit: If you can click the modify button in your last post and delete the mediafire link so it isn’t available to the public, thanks.

Essexboy will give instructions on when and how to uninstall his tools.

Essexboy now has the zip file thanks, post with mediafire link removed to stop access to the public

Ta got it - lots of new ones for the virus boys to play with ;D

Are you happy for me to remove my tools and tidy you up now ?

haha glad I could help. And yep Essexboy that would be great. I’ve also realised my system restore function is back to normal as well.

I’m ready to tidy up when you are ;D

OK lets try again, when I tried to post this yesterday my motherboard decided to quit, courtesy of a faulty PSU. Currently working from a borrowed laptop

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTS and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter
For the first run I would recommend a boot defrag and disk check

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
