reducing the frequency Avast checks for updates

I am using Avast 4 free in a Windows XP PC. Although I realize the importance of Avast getting updates, is there a way to reduce the frequency with which Avast checks for updates? The frequent Avast downloads slows down the laptop I am working on and is annoying. Similarly, when I resume the laptop (by opening the lid) Avast slows everything down by checking for updates before I can do anything else - even if I had just shut the laptop lid a mere 10 minutes earlier.

I know I can change the setting to manual updates, but I prefer not to do that as I might forget to update. So what I am looking for is some way to just “reduce” the number of times per hour Avast connects to check for updates or download them. A calculated risk I am willing to accept. Is there such a setting?

Thank you

I can only assume that by closing the lid of the laptop it effectively disconnects your internet connection ?
avast will check for updates when you first connect to the internet, and every 4 hours if you remain connected.

What is your connection method (broadband, dial-up) ?
I’m on dial-up so every time I connect to the internet, it will check for updates, so if the question I asked first is true (effectively your in the same boot as someone with dial-up), then every time you reconnect to the internet it would check for updates.

I have a manual delay set as there is no check for 5 minutes (300 seconds).
You need to edit (using notepad) the [InetWD] section of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini file and add the following line (depending on your connection type enter one or other of the Bold lines below):

Dial-up connections, add this line: RASWaitSeconds=120
Broadband connections, add this line: AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120

[InetWD] AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 Or RASWaitSeconds=120
When complete save the changes, avast's self-defence module will ask for confirmation, etc. answer Yes.

The figure is seconds and the above equates to two minutes, you could try that and adjust upwards if required, 180, 240, etc.

Thank you for replying. I am on broadband cable internet connection and you are correct that the laptop disconnects from the internet every time I shut the lid.

Your suggestion is precisely what I was looking for and I will implement it. Thanks.

Is there a website that provides info on other such modifications/customizations?

Jeff

Actually I was not able to save the modified file. I get a message saying there was an error saving it and that the file is probably locked by a application. Get the same error even when I shut down Avast.

This is Windows XP and I am running as the administrator.

I disabled (temporarily) Avast’s self defense module ad then could save the modified file. I then re-enabled it back.

Thanks.

Had you used notepad as suggested it would have allowed the modification and just sought confirmation the edit was intended, etc.

The site for such modifications/customisations it this one ;D
Stick around and browse the forums, especially the sticky topics at the top of each of the forums, not to mention the avast help file. They provide a wealth of information to help you get the best from avast.
