Registered/upgrade from avast pro to home 4.8 and IE not working correctly!!

Hi

Yesterday I registered My Avast Pro- Also changing it to Home edition in the process. Everything works fine except Internet explorer. It will not display contents of pages however says done at the bottom.

  1. Hotmail (just says done and no visual display)
  2. BBC I player - just errors - cannot display page and script errors. (reinstalled this to no avail)
  3. Dell Support page also blank- cannot run there utilities either.

I thought it was a windows update so I restored back to an update- thus removing the avast update too and everything worked fine. I then re registered avast and the same issue came back.

Typically I use firefox how ever i use IE for certain things that firefox cannot do. I have only used avast on this PC - no norton or macafee- is a very new laptop.
My IE is version 7.

I have gone through all the settings in my avast, my firewall and internet explorer and still cannot resolve this issue. I use avast with S&D.

Please can anyone help. My next step was to upgrade to version 8 internet explorer but I would like to resolve the problems before I do.

Any help would be appreciated.

???

Try going here and following the directions on the page: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

After that’s done, download avast home again, and put your home license key in.

Thanks for the reply…

I uninstalled as requested in safe mode and downloaded the Home edition and this has not made any difference.

so… I went back to the original restore point.- where IE was working.

then removed with the utility again in safe mode. when the Pc rebooted- I tested that after uninstall IE was working which it was.

The S&D had an avast reg entry on ashserv.exe and I said yes to this - assuming it was trying to complete the uninstall after the 1st reboot.

Then the problem reappeared. So again have installed the Home edition and still have the same issue. Any further pointers?

Now:- my malware in security center is telling me my avast is out of date- which it isnt as I have downloaded any additions that it prompted me for.

Any additional help would be appreciated.

Having gone back using a resatore point may have inadvertant consequences relating to avast being in date or not.

Do a manual update of avast, right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select Updating, iAVS Update.
Ensure that your system date is correct, double click the clock and check day, month and year, adjust as required.

I really would like to know exactly what this S&D entry is in relation to ashServ.exe the main scanning engine of avast, it doesn’t require outbound connection, so S&D (presumably tea-timer could be complication the issue) ?

Hi

The security center was fine after a reboot. Here is the todays Log file from S&D. The one I accepted was is in Bold. As you can see I also tried resetting the IE browser settings aswell. Is this sufficient information?

Well there are no entries for ashServ.exe that you mentioned, the ashDisp.exe is the avast system tray ‘a’ icon. I don’t know if the avast errors might have occurred because whilst you are making a decision in tea-timer ashDisp.exe is effectively blocked.

This entry is you actually removing ashDisp.exe, but is restored in the bold entry you show later.

Having accepted it in the next boot, I would have though it would display as normal. The ashDisp.ex isn’t part of the avast security it is just the means of access to the program settings and avast on-access protection controls. It shouldn’t have any impact on the internet explorer display.

If you can display pages in firefox but not internet explorer there is something wrong in IE as the web shield effectively doesn’t know or differentiate between firefox or IE. What that might be is beyond me I haven’t installed IE7 (soldiering away with IE6 SP3). I don’t know if installing IE8 might bring any differences as it is out now.

I don’t know what is going on with this file name as a google search on it returns zero hits and that makes me suspicious.

I have upgraded to IE 8 and still have the similiar issue. It now cannot connect to the web… I am going through Microsoft help pages to see if I can resolve this. Again firefox is still fine…

Very Puzzling indeed!!

I will update as soon as I can resolve the issue…

Thanks for your help though!!!

You’re welcome.

Check the security settings in IE if they are too tight it could cause issues, unfortunately I can’t be much help in regard to IE as I avoid it like the plague.

Hiya!!

Well im still battling away. I have followed everything from Microsoft and there solution is system restore. There is no way to uninstall and re-install IE7 as it comes with vista. The repair tools dont work either.

So my last resort is to go back to manufacturers settings and re- install everything!!

The aswclear.exe does uninstall Explorer addons along with the other avast items. This I think is the issue as I went back to an earlier restore point - tested IE was ok. went into safe mode with networking testing IE was fine. Then ran the utility - tested IE again and had the same issue.

Any chance the utility can have the IE part removed to save me rebuilding everything??

I know its a long shot but it much just work. !!! Oh i hate IE tooo… but I have to use it for work webmail as firefox doesnt display it correctly!!! What a pain!!!

There is no IE add-on in avast the web shield monitors port 80 http traffic and that isn’t in your browser but independent of it.

If this were only an avast issue then it would also be apparent in firefox as it isn’t integral but independent of it.

Being that it is a Dell laptop, it most likely came with an AV program pre-installed.

What was it and how was it removed?

There was no AV supplied, I had customised the order without and Protection. I just Installed Avast Pro.

It makes sense what David is saying, it’s just IE is Rubbish!! Anyway I am in process of backing everything up so that I can go back to original factory settings.

Gives me a chance to Clean it it!!! Good Practise too!! Thanks for all your help guys!!

OK … just wanted to make sure there were no remains of some other AV service.
