Registration and Usage Questions.

Hello boys and girls.
How many different computers can I run Avast 4.8 Home on ?

I have another computer I have avast on that never opens a browser
to the internet.
I need to get a license key for it.
And while we’re on the subject how do I know how long ago I installed
AVAST! on that computer ?
I don’t think it has been very long, because I just put this computer together
not long ago, but I have a License key in there,
might be a temporary one I don’t know.
But it feels longer than the 60 days I read. That’s why I ask.

If you are using your computers for home and non-commercial use (both have to apply) then you can use one registration key for them all.

Check about avast (right click the avast ‘a’ icon) and look at the Updates Expiration: date that tells you how long is left.

Hello again DavidR, Thanks for the reply. and quick.
Well, I tried to put in the license/Registration key (are these the same ?)
from this computer,
4.8 Home, Build May2008,(4.8.1201), WindowsXP Home.

But it says Invalid key.
I just noticed the computer I am trying to update,
is Windwos98Se, but it’s
4.8 Home, Build July2008 (4.8.1229).

Also I remember something that sucked, When I downloaded It wouldn’t
let me use my same email, I had to use a different email, (wierd…)
That is for a 3rd computer in the living room that key doesn’t work either,
and it is,
WinXpHome,
Avast 4.8 Home, Build 4.8.1201, like this computer.

And the computer I am trying to update has a registration key in there,
but it says,
TYPE: Time limited
Expiration: Thursday, December 04, 2008 1:51:17 AM

But the other 2 say,
TYPE: Home
Expiration: Never

Any thing Else I can do ?

You can’t just copy the key from your computer, I assume you mean from about avast or any other avast location as it doesn’t display the ‘full’ key, this would lead to the invalid key error.

You have to find the email that came from register (at) avast (dot) com and copy the registration key from there or copy the email to the other computer and cut and paste from that.

It shouldn’t matter about what OS as the registration key is independent of any OS.

It should allow the same email, but what it does is send a copy of the registration key associated with that email address if it is still in date, but it wouldn’t reject the email. So you will have to be a little more specific about the problem, what you did , what happened, any errors, etc. ?

Since all of your programs are now out of date, 4.8.1282 being the latest version, you should download the latest version and save that to your HDD, this can be used to do an over install on most of your computers (though with the win98 system I would suggest a uninstall, reboot and install.

The Expiration Never related to the program and not the ‘Update expiration’ which wouldn’t be never. This may be due to having an old version installed that also had the Program expiration which would be never.

Since the proper update expiration is close on your XP Home system is close I would suggest you re-register and choose the third option for the re-registration, e.g. I’m an existing user and need a new registration key/ expired, etc. or words to that effect.

Complete the avast! 4 Home Registration form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.

There’s alot to say here, but I will deal with Avast asking me for a different email address later. Maybe it has to do with one of the options.

So I was using the KEY from my email, whch says it’s invalid.
The key has the “base” key, plus a (-) and more numbers, and Also tried it with out the dash adn following numbers,
AND I tried the key from the other email account it made me get,
both do the same thing.

Not trying to copy from the “About Avast” section.

You need to copy and paste the complete registration number both parts including the -.

The key obviously has to be valid, in date as the date the email is sent is the start for the registration period, check and ensure that your system date is correct.

Q: “Invalid license number”. Why? http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-invalid-license-number.html Or Insert Registration Key - Video

Here is a screeny of about Avast on WinXP, That I am on right now.

Well it is clear from that the updates expiration is extended so I would assume that it was valid when you input it or it wouldn’t have been extended.

I would certainly do as suggested download the latest version and install over the top of this out of date version. If as you say you are getting an invalid license you wouldn’t be able to update normally anyway. It may even be best to reinstall as I suggested earlier, this has resolved invalid license issues in the past.

If ‘overinstallation’ does not work, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Hi again DavidR.
To make a short (Fixed Thank you story long)
Well I might have been making a slight mistake, I could sware I pasted they key in.
But I was also trying to hand type it, by looking from one computer to the other.
I thought maybe the problem was a “O” or “0” problem, but that didn’t work.

So just now I went back to my saved email registration and copied it to
a text file, put it on my USB drive and put it in the other computer,
copy/paste on Win98SE, Voila! Fixed.

I do wonder though 2 things.
Would it only accept a pasted version and not a hand typed key ?
That would be a little wierd.

Ooops! Just dawned on me, the “other” key I was trying to input was over a year old, saved email.
Although I was trying to “hand type” both and it refused.

So with WinXP I can just “overwrite” the install,
and Win98SE you want me to Uninstall first ? Using Add/Remoe Programs first ?.

Could I just use the Avast “A” icon link “updating”/Program Update ?
For the computer connected to the internet ?
OR is it best to just downlaod the whole thing and run it ?

Now I will investigate why the heck, The registration told me to use
another email account, when I downloaded a "new version for my other computer, while my current install ( this computer) was “current”.

I am just now seeing you “install” “uninstall” procedure
Thank you.

You should be able to typo (excuse the pun) the key, but there are too many chances you will type it in wrong, so it is far easier to copy and paste.

In theory you can install over the top of any installation, but in the forums there have been a number of people with win98 (not all of them) that have had problems and they have had to go down the first uninstall, reboot and install the latest version.

So rather than have this as a possibility, I would generally suggest a reinstall if you are unable to do an avast auto/manual update to the latest version. That way you know it should be fine, since you have large gaps in the version you have to the latest version again I would consider that the best option for win98.
