I’ve used Avast on Windows for many years, and still put it on Windows PCs I set up for friends. However, I’ve been using Linux (PCLinuxOS) myself for some years, which hasn’t needed an AV app. But recently I’ve been using a new camera with HD video, and have been making small ‘movies’ I like to share with the Windows using friends. A Linux logon can have Viruses, Trojans, etc, that don’t affect Linux, but could severely affect Windows - if those friends, particularly the kids keen to see “Unky Dave’s videos” - forget to run their Avasts on the material received.
So some way of checking before sending has become essential. I “attempted” to use the Linux ‘default’ AV app, ClamAV, but wasn’t able to work through the scripting and command-line stuff to get it working. So after Googling to see if there is a Linux Avast, I asked on the Distro Forum about it. The Forum has a good install Guide for Avast, which I followed, and now have an install of Avast ready to go - presenting the Registration Box, with Avast Site link.
However, when I follow that and think I have done the Form properly, I’m not getting a Registration code by email - and I do check both Mails and Spam when I look. I’ve repeated this for several days, so far.
Perhaps I’m not doing something right, or need to add something…? Could somebody kindly advise on the correct procedure, please? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Tech - Thanks but the only interface I’m getting up from my Avast install is the Registration Box. That is, no page that offers a trial mode temporarily. Starting from a terminal, again there is the request for the key.
The Linux version seems to differ from the Windows version - with which I am quite familiar - and its Auto-Registration page.
So all I can do at present is keep checking my mails.
Yeah, the Linux does not offer a trial because it does not exist. My fault mixing your version (Linux) with the registration problem (also present in Windows).
Tech - I’m starting to wonder if - as mentioned in another thread - Linux gets so little “priority” that there might not be a key for the Linux version - perhaps until there’s an update version.
While Avast might be primarily for Windows, which has most of the Desktop PC market in North America and the UK, it’s a pity that such an important leading firm like Avast is overlooking the rest of the World - where Windows doesn’t reign supreme, and Macs are rare or unheard of.
In North America and the UK, Mac is indeed the No.2 O/S - but worldwide, it isn’t. Linux is in majority use in Russia - and their whole education system runs on it, in Brazil Linux is the majority PC system, and it is widely used in the rest of South America. Linux - particularly Ubuntu / Kubuntu / Edubuntu is widespread in Africa. And in China, with both Open Source and Govt systems available for PC users, there are hundreds of millions of users - though Windows is also in wide use.
It would indeed be very sad if a company like Avast was losing so many potential users.
I shall keep checking this Forum to see if there’s any news - or indeed a new version coming for Linux…
