I hope I’m not asking an old question but time is if the essence for me so I must ask. I use the free version of avast. Do we still have to re-register each year or is it done automatically? The reason I ask is my wife, who knows very very little about the tech end of computers ,will probably be the sole user of this computer for some time and I’m trying to explain some important aspects to her such as a current anti virus. For instance my current reg ends on 8/05/12. We used to have to get a new key to reg but didn’t that go away. Thanks everyone for your help whenever I would come to the forums to ask a question. I always knew it would be answered in a timely manner. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated by me.

Yes you will still have to register every year through the maintainence tab on the avast interface or right click the orange ball and click registration, no reg key to download anymore just fill in the form.

Fire,
the programm will show you an information when it’s time to register new.
This information appears automatically ~14 days before the “old” registration ends.

You will normally get a pop-up notification that you need to renew, about 14 days before your registration expires. There is an ad if you want to upgrade to the Pro/AIS versions, but you aren’t forced to do that, just select the avast free version.

When you get the renewal notifications, the avastUI, Maintenance, Registration section layout will change to enable you to do the re-registration.

Many thanks to all of you.

I am 7 days away from expiry … notice has come up as:

Problem: Clicking the free avast option will not respond. Any ideas?

Server issues, busy, etc.

Try the old method of completing an on-line form and getting an email, etc.
Web site (Off-line) Registration rather than using UI Registration see support.avast knowledgebase article 612 Off-line registration.

Thanks David,

I tried again after a few hours and I was able to get in to register.

After several days of repeated failed attemps I felt like they were planning on my giving up and opt for the paid service.

No problem, glad I could help.
