No, they are not too interested in their own coffee mugs, whatever that means… they are too busy making avast! available even as freeware product. They are too busy preparing all those VPS and program updates, and providing free help through forums, e-mail and by the phone… all that for freeware version of avast! as well. They work as bees, so some Patience is greatly appreciated…
As far as you license number goes… what version of avast! you are talking about, home or Professional ? Do not copy/paste that number, 'cause sometimes, actually very often, you can copy one extra character at the end of the line. That character is “space” character. If you enter it that way, of course it won’t work. I’m not saying you did that, I’m just trying to point your attention to that problem, because we had many users tried to enter their license key that way, and all of them had same problem… space character at the end of the license number.

Is your system date/time correct?
Do you use copy & paste method?
Are you sure you do not include the ‘last blank space’ in the paragraph while copying & pasting?
Which avast version are you trying to register (Home or Professional)?
As you can see, we need more information before trying to stop drinking our coffee to help you ;D
