I know this issue has been stressed extensively, but with the topics I have found none have answered my problem.
I own the latest edition of avast! home, and have owned it for a while now. I have switched the program over to a different hard drive and it now asks for a registration key which, every time I input one recieved via email (I’ve tried 3 times), it claims it is invalid.
I have followed the help steps provided by ALWIL, up to and including the registry configurations.
I have not altered my system date/clock.
I have not experienced this problem since I copy/pasted the program with safe mode over to a new hard drive. Please help, for I do not wish to be without avast’s great protection which I have utilized diligently up until now.
Hi, Welcome to the forum.
You can’t actually copy the program from one drive to another. It’s surprising that any element of it is working.
You need to install it on the drive you want to run it from.
Prior to doing that it would probably be best to completely remove it in safe mode using the Avast uninstall Utility, which you can get here.Hope that helps.
(Also, check your time and date is current, update it from the time server.)
You shouldn’t post the complete registration key in an open forum and just leaves it open to harvesting, which isn’t likely to help either (please modify).
Are you asking for a new key or a lost key as that would resend a copy of your previous key ?
The registration key is also (within various locations) linked to the unique ID for the hard disk, so this may be your problem. And having just copied it over to a new HDD rather than reinstalling it won’t help.
Although you say you didn’t alter the system date, confirm that your system date is correct, day/month/year and adjust as required.
If the system date is correct, I would suggest a clean reinstall, which should clear any old data:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
-
- Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Whilst the_S said copy, it does rather depend on how it was copied, e.g. if a drive image was made of the C partition/drive and avast was on that, cloning a new HDD would work up to a point. That being the registration link with the unique ID of the old disk and the new one. Personally I would always recommend a clean reinstall, less likely to be problems.
Post modified. I will get a new key.
I was worried about that being the problem. If it still persists, I will notify you. Thanks.
I have cleared the copy of avast! and replaced it with the direct download. Avast is up and running. Thanks again for the assistance.
No problem, glad I could help.
Happy New Year.
