Registry Errors

My computer slowed down tremendously (web navigation speed) in what seemed like an overnight period. Shortly after, I have gotten several of the dreaded “blue screen” lock ups with the 0x8E and 0x7E error messages. I haven’t had any issues be identified by my Avast scans though. Speed tests (speedtest.net) still show download of 20MBPS so it isn’t my connection.

When I run a registry scan for errors, it gives me 100s of errors that are mostly:

  • The file referenced doesn’t exist
  • The registry key contains no data

After “fixing” the errors they just come right back. Any chance this can be some sort of virus that Avast isn’t picking up? Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Faulty HW (RAM, HDD) or filesystem corruption would be my bet.

NEVER EVER RUN A REGISTRY CLEANER. THEY DO MORE HARM THEN GOOD.

Dieselman, please, don’t be so radical in the opinions posted…
CCleaner registry cleaner, for instance, does not harm at all…

Any suggestion on how to identify what the exact problem is?

Yeah, run memtest and HDD diagnostics.

Be prepared for a lengthy memtest
Try chkdsk too
Go to the website of your HDD vendor, sometimes there are good test app’s

CCleaner is a temp file and history cleaner first and foremost. Since he did not say which registry cleaner is why I made that statement.

No problems found with hardware.

“I am guessing” this would all depend on what Registry Cleaner you are using??? Maybe I missed it somewhere, did you mention anywhere what Reg Cleaner you’re using, and how long have you been using it for??
Guessing again…Some Reg cleaners give you the results that are basic errors…than the other errors that are added are there for if “advanced users” want to do extra error fixing…Which doesn’t mean that all are bad…
Just thought I’d add this in case you were using a new reg cleaner…
Cheers!!! and safe surfing!!!

Thanks. I trashed it and don’t remember but that is not my main point. The blue screens were indicating that I had a problem with something.

I googled the issues that I mentioned in the first post and what I read indicated that it was either a hardware problem, registry issue or virus.

The first thing I did was check the registry and I found the problems I have noted. After a suggestion here that it was probably hardware, I ran windows diagnostic and there were no errors found.

Mysteriously after that, the computer was back to normal speed. We’ll see what happens from here on out.

Thanks for all the replies.

Computer has really sped up since I found the Alureon-FZ virus and deleted it.
