Hi, Is the feature remote enabled GPS working with GB 2.3.6 yet? or still under development? Thanks.
No, Google removed that APIs in 2.3.3 - you need to root your phone to do this.
hi , so to clarify if i root my phone, avast can remotely enable gps, and in the future track the device?
this product is looking good, thanks for the hard work.
If your phone has GPS, yes.
Why are other similar products able to turn on GPS on devices with 2.3.3 or above?
Hi. On my rooted Xperia Arc with stock Android 2.3.4, and maybe other Sony Ericsson, there is a problem with auto GPS enable. It’s a confirmation message which is displayed allways when trying to turn GPS services on. It is shown even when Avast is forcing to enable and without user iteraction it cannot be enabled.
It works like on this movie.

It would be great if you can fix this
So if you disable the GPS in the device settings, those applications are able to turn it on even if the device is not rooted?

can you please tell us which products you mean? I am not aware of any!
did you enable the “auto enable GPS” checkbox?
did you enable the "auto enable GPS" checkbox? My phone is rooted and I cannot check it because it is grayed-out with message "Automatically enable GPS on non-rooted phones on demand (will be done by default with rooted installations)". I guess it checked on somehow :)
it happens to me exactly the same (the option is grayed gps enabled and does not allow select), and I’m not sure if my location is enabled, because when you try to send an text message with the command “locate” does not answer me though take credit for messages, please help me to make me work? Thanks from now
hi if you installed rooted, this option is grayed out because it only applies to non-rooted installations!
not sure, does it mean that ON ROOTED DEVICE no window will pop up? Or it will be anyway?
Or there is not a chance to avoid showing that window alert at all?
thanks
i have never heard of confirmation popups on ROOTED devices. thats really strange - maybe in your kernel there is some hardcoded dialog built in?
I have to test it… but on my second phone (SE Xperia Mini) the confirmation email was displayed if GPS was disabled in system settings and I tried to enable it by some remote feature.
It standard for SE ROMs >:( …but I didn’t test it since the phone is rooted… will check and share my findings…

Yes it seems to be a problem with all xperia phones with stock roms ::), the same if you remotely enable data (which i assume avast can do), a notification comes up asking to confirm. The workaround would be to have gps enabled all the time, and if no application is using gps, it will stay dormant and not use any extra battery power.
However i do not want to have data enabled all the time, my question is if my phone gets stolen is having gps enabled enough to get a location or does data need to enabled as well?
It would be great if avast in the future had a workaround for this sony specific problem.
Currently you can get coordinates using SMS so no Internet connection is needed for this.
