I have been an IE holdout for a long time only because I like the integration of IE and other Win/MS utilites, features and programs. Unfortunately, we now see a need to seek out other third party programs that will work just as efficiently with each other…in other words Browsers, Email clients, filters, firewalls and anti-virus software. My comments are only derived from my own use and evaluation of these programs. To each there own.
Independent Browsers:
-
Mozilla which has been in development for some 5 years. Fast, stable and reliable. Mozilla is fast loading, comes with many features like intergrated email, chat etc.
-
Firefox (Mozilla clone…formerly Firebird Phoenix) is still in its’ infancy being developed by a sub-team of the original Mozilla.
It acts faster than Mozilla but does not have all the bells and whistles (At least not yet!) Very stable.
Will automatically transfer IE settings, bookmarks/favorites etc. Multi-tab browsing.
-
Opera is one of the best feature packed browsers around. However, I still do not like ad supported software. Although the window is small and Opera does not use pop-anything ads…it still is distracting in the upper right corner. Overall, Opera is one of my top picks for functionality, stability, and design.
IE Overlays:
Since an overlay works on the IE engine, and that is why we are looking for a substitute, then the listed browsers are not evaluated:
Avant
MyIE 2
Sllim Browser
Green Browser
ITrix
Sleepers:
Okay, What the heck is a “sleeper”? A sleeper is a program or utlility that goes unoticed but is of great value:
Wysigot Light Wysigot is an offline/online browser that saves and monitors Internet and network (LAN) documents and optionally alerts you if any of them have changed. It provides several tools for capturing, updating and comparing the stored data as well as a basic search function.
Off by One Off By One Browser is an independent web browser that runs completely self-contained and does not require any other browser - it does not use the IE browsing engine. It can even run directly from a floppy, CD, ZIP etc. without installation
Netscape and AOL are basically front ends, not true browsers, so I did not treat them here in any form.
I could go on to name and evaluate 2 dozen more browsers but they are not popular and little info is available on their integration with Microsoft and Windows utilities.
TECHIE’S PICK
All things considered, I would try Firefox first with Mozilla and Opera falling in behind. Why? Firefox is still going strong and building off the mistakes, errors and bugs of its’ predecessors. I just like “growing” things. In some testing, I found Firefox a bit faster than Mozilla original.
Mozilla however is still one of the top performers overall.
Opera is a really nice browser, but as I mentioned, I just don’t like ad supported stuff, but if it were not for the ad box, then this would be my # 1 pick.
So…which one am I using now…Firefox.
