I am supporting someone on a computer that has had Avast installed for several years. Recently it appears that the subscription was inadvertently changed to the Internet Security version (possibly on a free trial) rather than the free anti virus. I can’t seem to change this back to the free version and Avast keeps telling us that the subscription is invalid.
How do I go back to the free version? Or can I? In the Account settings it says “There are no licences that can be used for your current device”.
The computer is a Windows XP (32 bit) system.
Try a clean install…
Download and save http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Download and save http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
Run the “avastclear” from above. You will be prompted to reboot into safe mode click “yes”.
Reboot.
Install avast free from above.
Reboot and register.

The easier option should be to uninstall the Avast Internet Security version from Control Panel > Add Remove Programs, avast antivirus - during the uninstall it should offer the option to install avast free.

Thanks for the help. Uninstalling did allow us to revert to the free version and everything seems to be fine.
