I have Avast home , and it’s due for renewal when I’m on holiday . Am I right in thinking I get an email with a code which I then need to enter to reactivate it ?

When you get back (you can do this from another computer if you want) send the registration form off, and you will be emailed a new key, very shortly afterward. The twice I’ve done it now, the key arrived almost immediately.
Just insert that key into the program (Right click tray icon>about Avast>License key) and you should be good to go.
You need to manually renew your code. You can do it now, in advance, just registering again.
