Repeatedly getting "The package is broken."

This error keeps coming up, at least once per day on an attempt to automatically update and more often than not when I try to update manually. It still says that Avast needs to restart my computer after each attempt, although I would have thought that this message would indicate that the update didn’t actually happen. No firewall installed. Any ideas?
Thanks.

  1. Get a firewall, this is an essential part of your system security, Zone Alarm free has a relatively friendly user interface.
  2. What is your OS ?
  3. Operating system restart needed by avast message could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt
  4. Have you got another (or had) AV installed on your system, if so what and who was it removed ?

Have you tried a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

  1. I know, I should.
  2. Windows 2000
  3. Was an empty text file, deleted it.
  4. Nope.

I will try the repair and let you know if it still happens. Also, the reboot message comes up even if I get the “Already up to date” message sometimes.

Even if the reboot.txt file is empty it can initiate the message.
Let us know if getting rid of the reboot.txt doesn’t resolve that message, there are a couple of other things we can check or do.
