Hello !
Using Avast 2014.9.0.2021 here, and perfectly satisfied with the program and every of its updates (save the GrimeFighter useless added utility, but well, one’s gotta earn a living, and it can be deactivated).
I noticed something that was definitely not planned, and it could cause Avast posssible legal problems.
Here’s the story.
Avast notified me that I had programs for which there were available updates, and, among them, there was winrar. I clicked to let the program update winrar for me. I had winrar 5.something (downloaded from rarlab.com around last december), in its free version.
One must know that winrar is famous for its eternal trial period, although the new version 5 came with more frequent nagging screens suggesting us to buy the program, and an even more annoying, although rare, additional nagging screen.
However, after Avast updated winrar for me to its latest version, the program’s nagging screens stopped showing up. Entirely.
Sure, from a personal point of view, I like the improvement, no more nagging screen every time ! Not even the super-awesome new nagging screen that prevents us from doing anything in the program during ten seconds, and, only after those ten seconds passed, finally accepts to show itself !
But… well… if I were rarlab, the editor of Winrar, I’d sue your for fast and easy money, as you’re preventing them from making new sales.
So here’s for my suggestion, even at the price of non-improved user comfort, you should really fix how Avast updates Winrar, it’s not worth it.
(Note to mods, admins, Avast staff, the Pope, or whoever is in charge of this : if I find my thread suddenly disappears because you don’t want rarlab to read what I wrote, sure, no prob, its very disappearance will mean it will have been read by the right persons.)
Kind regards,
Oliver
