[REQ] Let Anti-Theft make frontface pictures

Hi guys.

Right before Anti-Theft was taken over by avast!, on the old forums I asked for the same feature. Then you guys said it was in the planning, but untill today there’s still no option to make a frontface picture in Theft-Aware.

The competition offers this option for over a year now, and it’s opensource, have a look at http://preyproject.com/ I mean how long can it take to implement this option in to Theft-Aware?

Kind regards, Z.

its already implemented, but due to legal issues we are still not able to release it.

OK thank you reinhard, but what i don’t understand then is why ‘prey’ can and Theft-Aware can’t. In Europe it shouldn’t be an issue though and ‘prey’ is a US open source project. I don’t see any difference.

Kind regards, Z.

hehe sometimes open source projects do not really care about user privacy legislation. we do.

Hello again Reinhard

It took me a few days to find out what jurisprudence there was on legality of making sneaky front-face pictures, and guess what? I didn’t find any, not in the Dutch court and non in European court. About the US jurisprudence in this case I can’t find anything to hold on. So what I mean to say is there might be no legal issue at all. Could you please explain what legal issues you are referring to, because I can’t find any legal limitations in making a front-face picture of a person that steals my phone.

As a fact only a month ago there was a iPone user who got it’s phone back in co-assistance whit the police, and have a look at this article. The iPhone has a system app that can do all the things Theft-Aware does, but inclusive making a front-face picture. I mean if a company like Apple has no legal issues why should Theft-Aware (or avast!) have any? Isn’t there anything you can do to finish the implementation and make it possible, making front-face pictures silently and send them to the avast! server?

Regards, Z. ???

stay tuned - as I said, we’re working on that.
