I have the Avast! 4.6 Home Edition. I have the July Build of 4.6.691. The version of the VPS file is 0538-7. I’m using a Windows98 SE.
My problem is that the Resident Protection is disabled, and regardless of what I’ve tried, I can’t seem to enable it again. I’ve ran the scan several times, looking for a possible virus. I’m not getting results that have helped me with this issue.
I have rebooted every time after running a scan. One time, it appeared that it was working again, and then it just disappeard from the tool bar completely. I ASSUME that means it is not working.
I’m not as computer savy, and don’t know the lingo as most of the people on this board, so please, if you have suggestions, start with the basics.
When I went to the home page of Avast! in the banner the page, there was a thing about Sasser32 being detected, but I don’t know if that was an advertisement, or a warning. Just in case, I ran a scan for the Sasser32 virus. (or is that a worm?) That has not helped.
I hope that I have provided enough information, and if I haven’t, I hope I can understand your questions.
I’ve had this program for over a year, without a problem until now, and felt that my single little home PC was protected. I think I have upgraded all definitions and versions that I can, without getting into the programs that cost money.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? I would appreciate it.
Do you have any other AV installed (which) or did you have another installed (if so how did you remove it and what was it).
Are you using any other security software?
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
I have had AVG installed, but unistalled it with add/remove. I have also disabled the AV that comes with Zone Alarm. I couldn’t get them all to work together, and opted for the AV protection of Avast! Security software? I’m not sure if you mean the Zone Alarm, and the Adaware, and Spybot S&D, (which I do have, and ran perhaps three days ago) or if you mean other AV programs.
To my knowledge, I do not have any other drivers installed, and don’t know what MDAC is.
I will try to repair as suggested, and hope that the uninstall, reinstall option is a last resort.
It appears that using the ‘change’ option in the Add/Remove program has my Avast! up and running again. At least, it has been running for the last hour. I sure wish I knew what I did, or if it was me at all. I have run a thorough scan, and nothing seems amiss.
Thanks for the help. I won’t hesitate to ask for help again if I need to!
