version 4.5 pro, build 4.5.523
VPS 0448-0
60 day trial
I’m using Outlook express, i noticed my email was not being scanned either way. I opened
“on-access protection control” / the internet mail icon is shaded, on top of the page it states “providor is waiting for subsystem to start” is there anything i can do to tweak this into working? or perhaps a workaround?
Outlook Express uses Internet Mail provider.
MS Outlook uses the plugin.
Are you sure you’re reading the error “providor is waiting for subsystem to start” on the internet mail icon?
The version 4.5 has a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages. Are your settings correct?
New email detection is automatic and do not require user interaction. Anyway, spam killer applications need manually change email account settings
Can you see in the headers of the messages (Right click the message, choose Properties and Details), for instance:
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Remember, the new mail filter in Avast 4.5 only works with NT, 2000 and XP.
Windows 98 and Me systems still need to configure.
What exactly makes you believe that your mail is not being scanned?
Have you checked “Insert message into clean mail” for POP, SMTP and IMAP in the On Access Protection Control…?

Under Internet mail, in on-access scanner, it says "the providor is waiting for subsystem to start. I set up the mail properties with my pop4 and smtp1 addys as supplied from my ISP. IOWs my settings are correct. What now?
BTW i’m running Win NT 4.0 ( Not server)

All right. NT is covered by the new 4.5 mail filter so no configuration is necessary.
Try a repair of Avast:
Go into Control Panel…Add/Remove and double click Avast.
When the options menu appears, find Repair and click on it. Let Avast repair itself, then restart the computer and try it again.
Ok?

Sofar I don’t see a problem. The “subsystem” it is waiting for is Outlook Express. Does the status of the provider change when you open OE?

No. the program has no effect on the scanner either way… I’m at a loss as to what’s going on.
Also, after i repair two files were placed on my desktop AvBatEx.bav and AvBatEx.tmp…

lso, after i repair two files were placed on my desktop AvBatEx.bav and AvBatEx.tmp
Strange, to my knowledge (and I could be wrong here) The Bat does not place things like that on your desktop. Besides you never mentioned that you are using The Bat (which the things you mentioned are part of)
Sofar it looks like you haven’t setup the mail correctly to me. (I could be wrong ofcourse)
And another thing is, you are still using NT4. This is a obsolete OS (or at least it will be in a short time) and many (large!) companies have already dropped support for it. (like Cisco and soon MS) Isn’t it time for you to upgrade the OS to (let’s say) 2K, 2K3 or XP?

Your right nt4 is an obsolete OS. However, that’s all i have right now… The mail program is working fine just not being scanned… But i’ll double check with my ISP just to cover all the bases.
I’m sure i’ll figure it out
Thanks for your time and effort

Is the problem solved with the latest version of Avast? (4.5.531)
And don’t worry, eventually we will find a solution to the problem
system

It wont let me download it, right now i have 4.5 523.
heres the summary message;
- Program: Already up to date
(current version 4.5.523)
- Vps: Already up to date
(current version 0448-0)
I also noticed the outlook / exchange is also shaded and not responding with the same message… “waiting for subsystem to start.”… with that in mind i think it may be a mail issue…
I liked the other version better were you manually set pop and smtp to 127.0.0.1 This version doesn’t seem to be as smooth
Oh well I’ll keep at it.
Again thanks

Ok, just to make sure. Run a online scan, Spybot s&d and Ad-Aware. At least we will know it is not malware that is interfering.

This might sound a bit too simple, but I had exactly the same problem using the Thunderbird email program.
No matter what I tried, the Internet Email icon remained greyed out and the status message just said ‘Waiting for subsystem to start’.
After a lot of advice on various possible solutions, I tried the following:
Click on the Internet Email icon to select it. Then click the ‘Terminate’ button. Now click the ‘Start’ button to restart the provider.
It worked for me!
