Resident Protection not displayed ... active ?

Hi there,

I just installed Avast 4.8 Home Ed. on Win XP Pro. SP3 and started it first time.
I know from my laptop (where everything works fine), that resident protection is on standard
from the beginning.
But now on this machine it’s always shown as deactivated.
Even if I switch it to standard or high and close the interface it turns back to deactivated
and after restart no “a” Icon is shown in systray.
Also any settings of scan-range (e.g. local- and removable drives) will be resetted automatically to ‘nothing chosen’.

I have read the thread “no icone” below, but everything described in it doesn’t help me.

Details/history:

  • recognized “digeste.dll” trojan on my system.
  • (hopefully) removed it with MBAM and SUPERAntispyware (both in Win secured modus)
  • deinstalled Avira AntiVir (which I used before but I’m no longer satisfied with it), restarted Win and installed Avast.
  • set Avast in the exception list of windows firewall to avoid any troubles with blocking.

Pls help me to get it running, otherwise I have to work with another program (what I don’t want to).

Two likely possibilities: Avira has left stuff behind, (use the number 6 download here: http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html) or malware is preventing Avast from running.
Lets hope it’s the first!
Let us know how you go with the utility.

I think it’s time for a system-overkill.
