resident protection not starting

my resident protection scanner doesnt start anymore. i think i may have accidently stopped a dll or something that makes it run.
any ideas?

How about checking the blue “a” ball located at the task bar^^

See the resident modules…if it is deactivated, then enable it^^

the a ball doesnt show up anymore

Do you have a System Restore point?
Have you checked recycle bin to see whether it is still holding what has been deleted?

Can you provide more details? What makes you think an accident occurred?
Is anything else not working that should be working?

Best answer these questions first.

Then –
Have you tried to repair or uninstall / reinstall avast?

Hi j skwad, welcome to the forum.
There are a number of reasons why this could be happening, including a corrupt or damaged install, the leftovers of another AV still installed (or uninstalled but not removed completely - common) or malware.

Let’s hope it’s not the third. But if it is, there are experts here who can probably help you fix it.

So. Corrupt or damaged install. Unlikely but has happened. If you had removed a dll belonging to Avast the self-protection module should have stopped you doing that. So if it’s associated with a missing dll, it’s more likely to be a system file you have removed.
-Try a repair. (control panel>add/remove programs>avast. Click “change”. The repair option will appear. click it.)

-Please post you OS, and if any other AV has been (or is still) installed.
-Please post your other security applications running.

Why do you think you may have accidentally stopped a dll?

sorry mkis, x-posted.

i tried the repair but the “a” ball still doesnt show up.
im running on windows xp and i used to have norton, but i uninstalled that. the only other security app i have i spyware search and destroy, but that never affected it in the past.
i think i may have stopped a dll when i was trying to remove a virus and i may have ended a process that the program uses.

Thats okay Tarq

J skwad, we ask these questions so we have a better idea of your problem.

How is your computer running otherwise?
Is your Windows updated to SP3?

If you could, any more details would be helpful.
Might help also to download this cleaner and run the basic clean of Windows, Applications and scan and fix issues in Registry. http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Then download the following and run a scan of your computer and save log.

HijackThis scan and log

Reply post the log here.
You may have to post the log in two parts if the file is too big.
People reading the forum will see your log and be able to help.

j squad, If you have quarantined the “virus”, please navigate to this folder: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast 4, and locate “ashChest.exe”.
Double click on it, select the “infected file” section, and report what is in there.

When you were alerted to the virus, do you remember the file that was flagged as being such?

Download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop, and after you have posted back, more instructions to follow.
