Resident-Protection not working

Hello, I have a Dell machine (730mhz, 128 mb ram, XP pro) that I’ve installed avast home on. I must say it’s worked wonders! We recently acquired this machine and avast found 7 viruses on it. Anyway, to my problem: I can’t seem to get the resident protection to enable. I have the sensitivity set to “high,” but it’s not showing up in the system tray. I’ve already read this post: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14212.0 and it doesn’t solve my problem. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Can you repair avast! to see if that works?

What OS are you using first?

Fixer is correct try a repair first

Go to start/control panel/add remove programs/ select Avast scroll down and select repair

You must be on line to do a repair also check that the services are running start /run/services.msc

ashServ.exe [antivirus service] Automatic
ashWebSv.exe [Web Scanner] Automatic
ashMaiSv.exe [E-Mail Scanner Service]Manual
ashUpdSv.exe [Update Service]Automatic
avast.setup [Update executable]Automatic

Try This.
Repair! missing avast icon download RejZoRs restore missing avast! icon tool - http://freeweb.siol.net/razor256/downloads/aswTrayIconFix.zip
Download it and extract aswTrayIconFix.exe anywhere you want.
Run it and just click Fix button. Log off and log in again or simply restart your PC and icons should be back again. The program is standalone extract&use (although it looks like installer).

Fixer, I’m using XP Pro, SP2. I tried repairing avast as was suggested, but it’s still not showing up in the sys tray.

I looked in services.msc and 4 out of the five files P3t3rb0nn listed are there: avast.setup is missing. How do I put it in? Oh, and ashWebSv.exe was set to manual, not automatic.

And DavidR, I keep getting an error 404 when I follow that link.

I guess that RejZoR has taken it down for some reason or other, that is the link I used previously.

Try, windows start button, run, type msconfig, startup tab, There should be an entry for ashDisp (is it there, is it ticked?) with a path C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe.

avast.setup is a temporary file that is created at update time so you won’t find it.

??? ashDisp isn’t there. How do I add it?

To fix the problem, just add the path to ashDisp.exe into
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
(Windows Registry key) (as the value named avast!).

Or fix tool for missing tray icons downloading it here: http://freeweb.siol.net/razor256/downloads/aswTrayIconFix.zip
Download it and extract aswTrayIconFix.exe anywhere you want.
Run it and just click Fix button. Log off and log in again or simply restart your PC and icons should be back again. The program is standalone extract&use (although it looks like installer).

Okay, I haven’t really worked in reg-edit before, how do I add the missing value?

Try first RejZor’s application, download it, unzip and run…
If it does not work, well, I’ll give you a hand…

I tried that link and I keep getting Error 404- not found on server.

In fact this is a WebShield problem and not the Standard Shield provider.
Which firewall are you using?
Are all avast processes allowed to connect the Internet?

We’re not using any firewall. AFAIK all avast processes are able to connect.

There are two different problems and we must separate them:

  1. The 404 error of connection. Maybe firewall, maybe WebShield, maybe your ISP, maybe the site you’re trying to reach.
  2. The icon on the taskbar and the state of the providers.
I suggest we solve first the second one and then start troubleshooting the first.

Okay. What’s the next step in troubleshooting the icon not on the taskbar?

Some possibilities:

  1. Fix tool for missing tray icons. Download it here: http://freeweb.siol.net/razor256/downloads/aswTrayIconFix.zip
Download it and extract aswTrayIconFix.exe anywhere you want. Run it and just click Fix button. Log off and log in again or simply restart your PC and icons should be back again. The program is standalone extract&use (although it looks like installer).

  2. Or download avast! External Control clicking on ‘Control’ in my signature.
Unzip it and run. You’ll see avast! tweaker option. Choose to show system tray icon and let us see if it helps.

    1. To fix the problem, just add the path to ashDisp.exe into
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
      (as the value named avast!).
Or, you can, copy the following code into a txt file and save it as *.REG and then click it to import to Windows Registry.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"avast!"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Alwil Software\\Avast4\\ashDisp.exe\""

You should use the correct avast installation folder in the path above and remember to use the doubled slashes \

  1. Are you by any chance using spysweeper? If so, use the restore/recover or whatever it may be called to restore the deleted registry entry and update your definitions file for spysweeper. It reports incorrectly (false positive) the avast ashDisp.exe which is the icon you see on your system tray.
