Hi. I downloaded Avast Home 4.7 yesterday. On the user interface, it says that the resident protection is “Disabled”. When I try to set it to normal or high, it is still disabled. When I put my cursor over the blue on-access scanner cirlce in the bottom right corner (next to the clock), it says: 6 providers total, 0 running. When I click on it, it says : “Status: Inactive.” The computer runs ME, so I manually configured the web shield HTTP proxy as instructed, but nothing has changed. Help? Thanks.
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Nothing would happen simply by configuring the browser to use the web shield if it wasn’t running.
Hey DavidR,
There is no other AV or anti-spyware on the computer right now-- only CCleaner. Adaware and Spybot were on it some time ago, but those were wiped away during a complete system restore.
That wasn’t what I asked the key part is ‘have you had’ as many leave remnants that can mess with another AV when installed, unless that system restore was a format and reinstall ?
Is there a Red circle and bar (like a no entry sign) over the avast ’ a ’ icon ?
OK, nortons av may have been installed some years ago (not sure) along with Adaware and Spybot. After doing a complete system search (C & D) for files containing the names of the programs, or the names of the manufacturers (lavasoft…), the only thing that came up was a winapp log associated with CCleaner. If it would be helpful for you to see it, let me know.
There is no red circle or line. Just two blue circles- one with “oa” in it, and the other with “i” in it (VRDB).
The system scan works fine, as do the updates. But no on access scan. Also, for what it’s worth, on the user interface, the status of the VRBD states “not done yet.”
Hi :
On this Forum we are concerned about possible "conflicts" with "remnants"
of former antivirus programs ONLY, not about remnants of programs like
CCleaner, Ad-Aware and Spybot . So you did a "complete system search"
for both "Norton" and "Symantec" !? We usually recommend the use of the
"Norton removal Tool" which is located on several websites.
As to your "Provider" status, have you LEFT-clicked on the "a" Icon, then
gone through the "List" of the "7" and clicked the "Start" button for the
One(s) you want to use ?
You have to manually Run the VRDB to change that, right click on the ‘i’ icon and select generate Now. Then you need to select which option for future generations, e.g. Generate VRDB when computer is idle or Generate VRDB only when screen-saver is running.
There is no other AV, any no remnants of any other AV on the system. Is there nothing else that could be causing the problem? Should I try to re-install it? Thanks.
