Resident Protection slider doesn't stay enabled -- Help!

I’m running Avast! 4.6 Home on my Windows XP computer. Somehow, the Resident Protection slider in the Simple User Interface has gotten set to “Disabled”. I can move it to the Default or High settings; however, when I restart Avast!, the Resident Protection slider is back at “Disabled.” How can I get that Resident Protection slider to stay put at one of the enabled settings?
(I really feel uncomfortable being so vulnerable to online viruses without Resident Protection being on.)
Please help! Thanks!

Change your settings.
Click Ok to close the settings window.
Go to the ‘a’ blue icon on the system tray.
Choose Shutdown all providers. Answer NO to persist changes question.
Boot.

The problem could be that, while trying to shutdown, avast! could not save the settings.
Disabling the providers and then booting will do it.
Welcome to avast forums.

The blue “a” icon isn’t showing up on my system tray (I assume that’s the blue bar on the bottom of the screen, in the area just to the left of the time display, where icons for various things appear). How do I put it back there?

Have you (or did you have) another AV installed (what)? - if so avast may not install properly.
If you had another AV (which one) how did you remove it?

If no other AV -
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

We uninstalled Norton Antivirus before installing Avast!; we do also have AdAware and HijackThis installed, though. Tried a repair of Avast!; no harm done, but no apparent change for the better, either (f.ex., the Avast! icon still hasn’t reappeared in my toolbar, and the resident scanner protection level still won’t stay changed to anything but “Disabled.”)

In reference to the earlier suggestion to change the Settings: I don’t see anything in the Settings screens that looks like it has anything to do with the resident scanner protection level. Is it indeed possible to adjust the resident scanner protection level from the Settings screens? If so, how?

Manual Removal NAV 2004
Manual Removal NAV 2003 or earlier

Set Custom level and click the buttom for Customize them.

Norton can be more difficult to get rid of than a virus as is reported in many treads in the forum.

Check the link relevant to the version of NAV you had given by Tech, the manual removal has usually worked for those experiencing this sort of problem.

As others have pointed out depending on your version of NAV it can be difficult to get rid of residual Registry settings etc.

If after trying the appropriate Symantec removal tool for your version of NAV as suggested in this thread and you still have problems you could either get an application like “Registry First Aid” or do it yourself with Regedit to search out “Norton” or “Symantec” entries in your registry to be deleted. This could be a bit tricky and dangerous, especially if you have other Norton applications. Actually, I wouldn’t recommend this if you have other Norton applications.

A safer way would be to un-install Avast, install Norton AV again and then make sure you have DISABLED (UNCHECKED) every function and process of Norton AV before you un-install the Norton AV in the Add/Remove programs.

I can’t be sure that by having all functions and options disabled actually makes the difference but I was able to successfully un-install my NAV2004 without the aid of the Symantec Removal tool. I am also fortunate in that I have heard that NAV2004 had a better un-install than most other versions of NAV which has been notoriously poor at doing a very good job removing their application.

I don’t see a “Custom” level among the choices on the Settings screen. I have Avast! 4.6 Home; is that Custom level only available in the Enhanced User Interface in Avast! Pro?

My spouse tells me that the Avast! icon disappeared from the toolbar after he installed HijackThis.

If none of the other suggestions posted so far work for us, we may uninstall/reinstall Avast!. I suppose we could also check to see if there’s still any remnants of NAV left, even after using Symantec’s own uninstallation tool.

Indeed, the deep truth here.

No, it’s available in Home version too. Don’t you see the Customize button?

Not after installing it but after removing legit entries of avast! installation.
Repair your installation. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

Run Symantec uninstallation tool AFTER removing NAV through Control Panel.

The screenshot shown is accessible by double-clicking the Avast! taskbar icon; however, that taskbar icon wasn’t displaying on my computer screen.

Uninstall/reinstall seemed to solve both the “missing taskbar icon” and the “can’t keep resident protection enabled” problems. Thanks for your help, everyone!

 When I “removed” Norton Antivirus 2004 BEFORE installing
Avast, I used my Add/Remove programs to uninstall 3
different “components” of Norton, then used my computer’s
“Search” feature, selecting “All files and folders” and
deleted numerous entries of “Norton” & “Symantec” it
found. I would strongly encorage you to follow this last
“step” to make sure ALL of the Norton Antivirus 2004 is
OFF your computer !? I did follow this with using Registry
First Aid to “remove” several more entries .

Happy to have helped, thanks for letting us know what worked for you, welcome to the forums.
