Hi, any help would be greatly appreciated. I just installed avast and like the program a lot. One thing is bothering me, however. I set the resident protection to “Standard” or high, yet there’s never an icon that shows up around the time on the taskbar area. Also, when I reload the main user interface, it shows the resident protection as disabled even though I just set it to a higher level. Can anyone help? Thanks.
OK, no need to respond. I examined other articles and found the solution for myself. For anyone else with this problem, just follow these instructions:
Go to the folder into which you installed avast.
Open the “Data” folder.
Open the “Avast4 (configuration settings” file (notepad doc)
About 13 lines down, there is a line beginning with “Database.” Delete “ODCB” and replace it with “XML”. Save the changes using the comman in the file menu “Save” and exit. Restart the computer and hopefully everything will be okay.
I hope this helps other people that may have struggled with this problem as well.

Yep, I have Windowns XP Pro, all up-to-date, and ODBC didn’t work. As soon as I made the change to XML, it all went well. I don’t have any components of MS Office on the computer, including Access. Did that have something to do with it?
