Resident Protection will not start

I have a user that I installed Avast 4 Professional on and it is up-to-date now, but the Avast real-time protection will not start. the Avast icon in her task bar has a universal no/restricted symbol over it.

Do any of the faq solutions help ?

If not the red circle is often associated with ether another AV installed or not fully removed.
Have (or did) this user have another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how was it removed ?

Thank you, I am checking to see if there are any remains left from a previous anti-virus program. I know that she had one on this computer before. ;D

Let us know what it was and perhaps we can point to an uninstall tool for it.

I have myself also downloaded and installed Avast yesterday (French version) but same as Igurney, I can’t activate the Resident Protection (“Protection Résidente”)
I went to the FAQ page (http://www.avast.com/fre/faq-red-circle.html)… did the required actions (sorry, can’t name the actions in English!)… but get the following message when starting “Avast! Antivirus”… :

ashServ.exe - Erreur d’Application

L’instruction à “0x77f73905” emploie l’adresse mémoire “0x00000000”
La mémoire ne peut pas être “written”
Cliquez sur OK pour terminer le programme
(meaning -if you need- that the instruction Ox77… uses the memory address 0x0… The memory cannot be written… Click OK to end)

I don’t have any remaining files of my previous antivirus… as far as I can see…

I do have other problems with Avast… Maybe it’s linked…
Among others: the quaranteen folder : When I click to open it I get the following message (again, in French)
Initialisation des fichiers de la zone de quarantaine
L’action a été accomplie avec des erreurs !
(Meaning : Initializing the files of the Quaranteen area… The action has been accomplished with errors)

Rapport d’erreurs :
Le programme ne peut pas utiliser le client de la zone de quarantaine : (null)
—>Description : Le serveur de la zone de quarantaine n’est pas actif.Echec de la communication RPC.
(meaning: The software cannot use the client of the Quanranteen area (null) - The server of the Quaranteen area isn’t active. Error on RPC communication)

I know it could be put in another topic but as it all comes after installation and both mention an “inactive” item, I thought it worth mentioning all here.

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
