Resident Scanner

Hi,
I have been using Avast for some time, and the little Avast icon used to be in my system tray, but I have not seen it for over a year now. Just about everything I read in “help” suggests clicking on it, and I cannot figure out how to get it there.
Here are my computer specifications:
Windows XP Home
512MG RAM
Firefox 2.0.0. 12 Opera 7.54, IE 6
ISP: Verizon DSL
Avast AV
Zone Alarm firewall
Spybot
AdAware
Spywareblaster
I sure hope someone can help me out as every time I do a scan it finds a trojan.
Thanks,
Elly

Oh yes, I use Avast 4.7

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?

Hi Tech,
I checked in appearances and it is checked - rebooted and everything.
Now I am going to try and repair my Avast installation - I assume I do this under "add or remove programs.

I do have Spybot and AdAware, but I also had them when it was working…

Sorry, I am a real dummy here (not everywhere) and I don’t have a clue how to do the rest of your suggestions…except uninstall boot, install again, boot!
Thanks,
I’ll keep you posted!

???

Hi Tech et al,
It is now working I had to uninstall and reinstall it.
My guess at what happened is that I forgot to register it last time - I now note that updates are only good for 14 months without registration - you can be sure I registered it this time…
Thanks again for your help…

Yes, this could be the reason, for sure.

I have an isue which might be related to this. In any case I’m new to the forum and not super PC savvy, so plz bear with me. I decided to get creative with my settings on my scanner and now each time anything is scanned it shows me in great detail what’s being done… the screen is almost 1/2 full http: addresses of what’s being scanned. I went back to undo my brilliance and nothing has changed back. I have updated, etc…and I am pretty sure re-set the program, is there anything else I can do? Is there a place for default settings? I don;t see it, but may not be looking in the correct place.

Thanks - mare

Sorry this is unrelated to the original topic.

This option, ‘Show detailed info on performed actions’ is off by default, so it would appear you have been tweaking avast without knowing the effect it will have. This function is also on the Web Shield and Internet Mail providers so you should also check those.

It's a good rule of thumb to get familiar with any settings you change before you actually make the changes. Not doing this can result in a lot of unsuspected and probably unwanted results.

This advise doesn’t only hold true for avast!.
