Resident Shields Sensitivity Levels Stuck At Default Settings

I just got 4.7 Home Edition. I love! the VRDB [and the greater # of user controls Avast! provides] but am having two problems with the “Resident Shields”. 1] i can get only 6 of 7 working [and worse, i can’t determine which one is busted], and, especially, 2] Their sensitivity settings won’t save, “take”. Different ones are at low and moderate, and if i set them at high and exit, next time i check them, they’re back to minimum or mid. Argh!
How can i fix this?

As reported a lot of times, the message “The provider is waiting on the subsystem to start” will be shown there until you open MS Outlook. The Outlook plugin will be enabled automatically after that. Probably this is the ‘disabled’ provider. Don’t worry, it’s normal, it’s ok.

Strange that the sensitivity level can’t be saved with Standard Shield.
With other providers, some of them like P2P, NetShield, etc. it could make no sense. The button is there just for ‘similarity’ with the other providers, high or normal makes no difference.

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help you just to change experiences 8)

Dear Tech-
Thanx for reply! Yah, the one inactive shield doesn’t look to be a problem [tho Avast makes unnecessary problems for itself by not warning folks about it, and about the “similarity” aspect].

But my standard shield is stuck at minimum sensitivity, and that does seem to be a big deal. Oh well, time for another round of uninstall and reinstall here-we-go-round-the-mulberry-bush.
[I run Sandboxie, AVG antivirus plus antispyware, Avira antivirus, Comodo firewall, Winpatrol, Threatfire and BoClean, etc!, but malware STILL gets by me, at the rate of a few a day. So i need all the help i can get!]

Buddhist to hot-dog vendor: “make me one with everything”.

I’m not surprised that you are experiencing problems with multiple resident anti-viruses installed.

Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended (3 even more so) as rather than provide twice/thrice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.

Unless you are a very knowledge and technical guy… you won’t be able to run two antivirus at the same time in the same computer without problems.

Well, with all due respect, i’ve seen different opinions expressed on this multiple virus scanners issue [and not by individuals with poor spelling who use all caps…]
I can definitely say that no one scanner catches all viruses, and that i haven’t apparently suffered any negative side-effects so far.
But i could be wrong, so i uninstalled AntiVir and AVG, and tried Avast! alone.
Same problem: resident scanner sensitivity stuck at minimum. So it’s not conflicts with other scanners.
Any other ideas?

This is not how it works. Both could left files and registry keys behind.
Avast installed after the presence of these leftovers could not be well installed.
Avira has a standalone uninstalled. A registry cleaner could help in some cases.

This is just a postscript to an obviously dying thread…
Well, even [or especially!] if you’re right, if Avast is so sensitive it won’t install properly if another companies scanner has ever been present on ones computer, it has a problem, don’t you think?

It’s not just Avast that recommends against running more than one A/V.

More a case of avast! won’t install properly if AntiVir is present.

You’ll need to uninstall avast!, use the AntiVir clean-up tool (address any questions as to why this should be necessary to AntiVir) and reinstall avast!

marc57 has pointed out that the recommendation not to install one AV with another already present is pretty common.

I’m not one of those who believes it is ever a good idea. I’ve had BitDefender Free and ClamWin (both non-resident) running along side avast!, but updates to both caused major problems. I reckon having two resident scanners is asking for trouble, and as for three… ::slight_smile:

I don’t think so, on contrary, Alwil team is avoiding conflicts/problems/crashes.
