Hi there, I instal AVAST in preference to AVG because of the boot scan. It’s a great extra and always picks up something. I must have put AVAST on over 100 computers but I have one at the moment, that each time I run a boot scan, it runs as normal for about 10 minutes then it does a fast scrolling on the screen for a further 20 mins or so. What is this? The laptop is running Vista. Thanks for your assistance.
It’s now been scanning for the past 40 mins??
Is this the only machine with Vista having this problem?
Does it seem to be stuck scanning one particular file?
Is this the first time scanning this machine?
It’s scrolling so fast it’s hard to tell. I previously ran various other scans ie SAS, Malwarebytes and a regular AVAST scan and removed win32:funweb-c and bv:malware-gen. I was getting a BSOD yesterday which resulted in the error message -
STOP: C000021a (fatal system error) The verification of a known DLL failed system process terminated unexpectedly with a status 0xc000012f (0x96e312d0) 0x00000000 The system has been shut down.
Other peculiarities are that on each restart it wanted to load the bluetooth driver but having run the scans above this seems to have resolved itself.
Not seen this problem before on any other Vista Machine.
Can’t tell whether its stuck.
This is the third attempt at a bootscan, the first time I manually closed the laptop down. The second time it finished within 10 mins, but this time it’s still scrolling, been over an hour now.
It looks like its the number options that is scrolling, could it have found multiple items and sending them to chest for instance?
Although, this morning I have not made any choices of where to send dodgy files. So it would have at least asked me the first time, for it to then repeat my option!!?
Had Avast been on this machine or was this a new install? What version and product of Avast is it?
So yesterday Avast found malware on this machine? Is it in the Virus Chest now? Or did you delete it?
When you did the MBAM scan, did that find anything? Is anything in quarantine?
I’m beginning to think that malware is causing this issue.
Stop the boot scan and go into Safe Mode with Networking.
Do you have access to another machine now?
If you are on a network…disconnect this machine from it now.
If you have access to another machine, please check the information on the first post of this thread under Virus/Worms for you to check your machine for malware: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0.
Use a USB stick to put the program on the machine you are having problems. Do not use this USB on another machine.
Follow the directions of obtaining the OTS logs (save them as ANSI and not Unicode). Post the OTS log as an attachment (Additional Options > Attach > Post).
I am going to refer you to our Certified Malware expert, named Essexboy. He will also review your log and give you further instructions, however he comes on the forum late UK time. He will respond to you in this thread, so remember to check this thread daily.
Please do not make any further changes to your machine after you have provided the logs.
IMPORTANT: If you are on a network, disconnect the affected machine from the network. Do not share a USB/flash drive with this affected machine. Do not use this machine unless Essexboy instructs you do to malware removal instructions; use a different machine to check email, sync your phone, etc. if possible. Basically…do not use the machine at all until Essexboy instructs you further.
It would be helpful if you have access to machine #1 (the machine having problems) and another machine (if possible) that you can use to access the forum to get instructions from us nearby.
Let me know if you have any questions. I am going to notify Essexboy now. Thank you.
Great no problemo!!!
Will get underway.
I replied back with copious info but got timed out, so I will post it again. Please bear with me.
Thank you
I’m leaving the forum now…time for sleep. But please post (screen shot if possible) what is in the Avast Virus Chest; if not possible type the file name and location. Same with MBAM as to what is in quarantine.
Most important is what I put in my last post about the OTS log as we will be able to see what is going on with this machine and help you most troubleshoot. After posting this log, do not make any changes with this machine and shut it down until you get further instructions from Essexboy.

I have removed previous version of MBAM, downloaded onto a USB stick the new MBAM from MajorGeeks, run the scan and am now doing the OTS scan with the necessary ticks in boxes.
Will attach the log once it completes.
I attach the OTS log file. I saved it with ANSI encoding. I have to go on some house calls now, will be back to work on this laptop at 9am tomorrow morning, Thank you for your help thus far.
Regards Julie
It looks as though MBAM and Avast got the majority between them. Funweb and click potato in the main
On completion of this run can you let me know what the current problems are
Start OTS. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the panel where it says “Paste fix here” and then click the Run Fix button.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here
I will review the information when it comes back in.
After running the “fix” that Essexboy just posted, please also let us know how your machine is acting after this as well. Thanks.
Good Morning
I attach the scan as requested. I shall have a play with it and see if I get any further symptoms.
Thank you.
Good morning to you as well. I’ll take a look, but I leave the real nasty stuff for Essexboy. ;D
