My apologies for taking so long to get back to you all; I had a six million dollar problem that took precedence over my computer.
Anyway, I just used the uninstaller to get rid avast and used the appropriate tool that was provided by ady4um.
Essexboy: I am not able to access anything in normal mode. I boot up the computer, and it gets me to a blocky login screen before promptly restarting.
What about getting rid of the remnants of the other security tools essexboy also found? The link I posted should also include the links for that other tool http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/.
OK from safe mode run this programme

Here is the combofix log.
Well we are not looking at a malware problem
Do you have any minidumps in the windows/minidumps folder ?
If so could you upload the last two or three to mediafire and post the sharing link
These two are the most recent files in the minidump folder; sorry there is nothing more recent.

From safe mode run an elevated command prompt:
Go Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
In the black box type SFC /scannow
ON completion let me know if you can get to normal windows
I’ve done that, and no, I couldn’t; the log is too large to attach, so I uploaded it.

It didn’t ask me for the disc, but I could run it again with the OS disc in.
Verify and Repair Transaction completed. All files and registry keys listed in this transaction have been successfully repaired
Next thing to do is look at the video stuff
Form the safe mode menu select enable low resolution and let me know if you can get to normal mode
No, I can’t.
From the description it does sound like a video card/driver problem
Could you open device manager in Control panel and let me know if there are any yellow exclamation marks
I clicked all of the little plus signs as well and saw no yellow marks (or any marks, for that matter).
Unfortunately the dumps were a few months old
Is there anything on the screen when it goes blue ?
I haven’t seen the screen turn blue in a long time; if the BSOD does appear, it is too fast for me to see (as the login screen simply blacks out).
Could you confirm that you only have one antivirus on the system and that the others were removed using the proper removal tools (not from control panel alone )
Once that is done then we will remove the video driver
Alright. Malewarebytes is the only antivirus program left on my computer (even mcafee’s gone!), and firewall is disabled.
Just to let you know, Malwarebytes is not an antivirus.
Did you run the removal tools for your previous AV’s? including McAfee and any other you have used in the past.
Go to Control panel > Device manager
Open the Display adapter heading
Right click the driver and select uninstall
Reboot
Thank you, essexboy, for making the time to help me through this for the past week.
A friend from the programming department is backing up my files and installing Windows 7, because month-end close needs to be finalized before the 21st and I get to handle it.
So yeah.
That was a formal thank you, but this is a formal IOU: if you want something from restoring old photos to a game, send me a message.
