[Resolved] No Sound Pls help

currently using Avast Free Antivirus 5.0.545… xp and i have enabled the sound settings but still dun have any sounds from avast including virus detected or virus definition update…

Try going to the avast GUI > Settings (upper right corner) > Sounds (left panel) > check to see if “Enable Avast Sounds” is checked.

yes it is checked…

Is everything on that page of the Sound Settings checked off?

yeah everything is checked …

Do you have sound from your machine from other software (Windows turning on/off, etc.)? Are your speakers on and working?

If you navigate to
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\sounds\1033
(e.g. in Windows Explorer) and doubleclick on any of the sounds to play them - do you hear the sound?

i tried it but i cant hear any sounds. It says " The file requires MP3 ACM Codec to be installed"

Which is your media player?

For wav files it is Winamp Media player…
Any suggestion?

Can you right click the mp3 file and try to open with Windows Media Player? Will it work?

ok… i played the wav files using windows media player. I can hear the sounds

Winamp MP3 ACM Codec should be installed I think.
Download it from a secure site (author, Winamp) or even test he installed in www.virustotal.com

The codec is included in any newer operating system (even in Windows 2000).
Try to run the following commands (e.g. using the “Run” option in the Start menu):
regsvr32.exe l3codecx.ax
regsvr32.exe l3codeca.acm

i have run the command as you said… it says “DllregisterServer in l3codeccx succeeded” but still no sound oo… For your information, i can play my music songs using winamp media player(mp3 files but not wav files)

still no sound…i can only play the sounds using windows media player but not winamp media player…

Is a wave file associated to be open with Winamp??

yes

Did you also run the second command (with l3codeca.acm)?

Winamp uses its own MP3 decoding engine, so it’s kinda unrelated. However, the fact that you cannot play WAV files means something is broken somewhere…
Btw, do you mean any WAV files, or only the avast! ones?

Try to install this hotfix:

It probably won’t help… but just in case.
