[Resolved] Non-SSL connection to gmail.com

All of a sudden today, I’ve started getting messages from avast about my gmail accounts, since they are set up to use an SSL connection. I’m sure I got those settings from Google when I first set up the gmail accounts in Outlook and Windows Live Mail. I’ve never gotten these messages from avast before, and I’ve been running Outlook and Live Mail with these gmail accounts for months.

Why is avast now objecting to the SSL settings? Should I go against what Google said to use for the account setup and do what avast is saying to do?

This is not new for avast! When setting up your servers- NO SSL.

Try it, you’ll like it.

I think that the problem is that the avast plug-in for Outlook isn’t working (some topics relating to this) or is disabled within outlook ?

If it is disabled or not working then the Mail Shield would be trying to monitor the email traffic, but it can’t do that (from outside outlook) if you have the Gmail, account, etc. in outlook set to use SSL.

SSL Problems The Mail Shield may not scan some e-mails - see https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=842. Whilst this is an old article and mentions avast6 it is relevant for avast7 also.

If it could be related in anyway… https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=102129.msg817658#msg817658

Yes and that is why it would be necessary to change the outlook email account settings so that the Mail Shield can scan the email traffic if the outlook plug-in isn’t working.

Thanks to all! I’ve modified my gmail accounts to be non-SSL and will let avast do its job. This question is now answered.

You’re welcome.
